Well my TRANS is still running like a champ with no slippage (knock-on-wood) to date.

I just think that 250k (in my case 199k) is actually a pretty damn good lifespan for engine heads and that I shouldn't feel ripped off about replacing them.

I just feel sorry for the young kid that buys one of these trucks at ~ 222k miles and thinks it will go to 300k without major (eg $2000) issues.

Downpour11, have you owned the truck entirely for that 400,000 miles? That is pretty impressive and I'm interested to hear what you have replaced so far because it is doubtful to me that no major work has been done on it..

These are great trucks and I finally realized that after owning an 06 BMW 330i and taking it to the dealership 4 times in 1 year, all @ < 60k miles.

Nope it was my grandfathers truck since he bought it new. I've had it for 3 years after he passed and put a good 60k miles on it. I have all the maintenance records and it's all regular 3k oil changes and the 30k mile dealership service. Also, all the AC hoses were replaced due to cracking.

Things I have replaced were all small things which are mostly regular maintenance things. Two starters, ignition lock cylinder, plugs, wires, fuel filter, pcv valve, (1) o2 sensor on the cat, fuel sending unit, battery, timing belt, water pump, fan clutch idler bracket, all belts, AC clutch, brake pads, upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, CV axles.

I currently have (2) valve cover gasket leaks and a blown rear axle seal.

EDIT: The only mod affecting the engine would be a K&N intake. My old intake was completely cracked and fell apart upon removal lol

I recall a mailman in Australia or something that put over a million miles on his Ranger with the original engine. rarely ever turned it off. cold starts are the death of engines.

That sounds pretty good. Glad to hear that its running so strong.

If you are still on the original radiator then at 400k it's probably time to change it.

i'm having a hard time understanding what could have gone wrong with the machines that had >200k on them.... except for abuse/ neglect/ accident happened....

I bought my 4runner with ~150k on the clock ~6 years ago ish, and blew the engine the first month i owned her, why? the a-hole that owned her before me hadn't changed the oil in AT LEAST 20k miles! the sludge was so thick i couldn't even see the valve springs! I had bought a warranty with it and so the dealer replaced the engine under warranty.

now @ ~248k, not a single issue in the past 6 years, and she's been ALL OVER the place! snow up to the headlight (base of the headlight), mud nearing the tops of the tires, and sand in so many places i still find clumps & piles in her 4 years after i took her camping on the beech.

I was a mechanic in College, worked on everything, but mostly Ford's and Subaru's, I've replaced at least 2 dozen Chrysler transmissions, Ford's had issues with EVERYTHING, and i only saw 1 Toyota in that shop, my parents when it ran out of water from a broken hose and overheated @ 267k miles (Corolla Wagon) now at 300k plus on the transplant motor .... i'll never own a different manufacturer of other vehicles again.

Toyota has made me a (fairly experienced mechanic) a loyal client For Life!

my 98 had 285k when i bought it september of 11, its at 299k with original engine and trans. still runs and drkives great!

I was in a taxi once and the driver showed us the odo as it ticked over 999,999. It was a Ford Falcon, but the guy confessed it was on it's third engine (3.2 straight 6). Still impressive.
