So, my tyranny is on its last leg. 350k miles. I just got a quote from two of the local shops...$5000 to rebuild. What the hell are they smoking. Sounds a little high. One of these shops rebuilt my dodge 2500 trans three years ago for $1200. Crazy. Does any one have a lead on a a340f?

Do you have a breakdown on charges? Must be a ton of r&r and rebuild labor. If you are OK with used, you can get a low-mileage (75k) transmission with a 1 year warranty shipped for under 1400 last time I checked. Of course you have to have the right friends or a shop and time. Probably a lot cheaper than that through local salvage. The above quote was from a national transmission reseller

ProDemand shows 18.0 hours of labor to remove/overhaul/install an automatic transmission for a 2000 V6 4wd 4Runner. Shop labor rate depends a lot on the region/area so a parts/labor breakdown would be helpful. I would assume that they would be replacing the valve body and torque converter with that many miles.

Pretty sure you can get a rebuilt a340f from Toyota for around $2.5k. Not sure about r/r though, plus you have to deal with the core charge

If you are unable to replace it on your own you are at the mercy of the shop's labor charges. Out here in CA that's around $150 per hour so it adds up real quick. It would be worth the time to see if there's any engine suppliers nearby with an A340F in good shape. The only problem is without seeing it perform on a running vehicle it's hard to judge the condition of the transmission. It's not like an engine where you can perform some sort of compression check.

Alright after freakin out. I did a little research. Found a used trans with 105k miles for $750. And a shop to do the swap for $850.
Not something I wanted to do in the middle of winter.
