Since rattling threads seem to be all the rage this week, looking for pointers on a noise I have been chasing for years. I've modified too many things to point it to a specific time.
The noise only acts up the most when:
1. The engine has been running for less than 15 minutes
2. The environment is cold (under 60 degrees or so)
What it sounds like:
I couldn't capture it on a phone camera, but I may try again. The noise is centered right behind the dash on the driver's side. On rough pavement, it sounds like some metal object is rattling around or swinging back and forth creaking. Going over large bumps at slow speeds, the creak is more like a groan, metal-on-metal contact. I can't hear it from outside the vehicle.
What it is not:
It is metallic and I'm 95% sure it's not located in the interior, since I've ripped into my dash twice looking for loose items or metal on metal parts and put felt pretty much everywhere, still noise. I checked the front wheel, brakes and ball joints, all are secure (and all are new). I checked the battery in the engine bay and tightened down all the items I've added on the side of the battery on the driver's side. The fact it starts to go away when the engine is hot makes me think the noise is located in the engine bay, but I don't know for sure.
Any ideas? Steering components? Items on the lower half of the firewall I've missed? Springs that tend to get noisy over the years?
