True. That would solve the finish issue. Ill run the dip for a bit and see if its worth the hassle of wrapping. Once I get my retro lights back on the truck, ill decide.

Another update on my now ever-changing audio setup, I got a good deal on a set of the 9" Volvo C70 midbass. These are verified to be produced by Dynaudio although there is some variation on how much they share with there retail MW172/MW182 counterparts.

Lucky for me, those huge 6x9 openings allow for a large driver to be installed with zero cutting. These also aren't too deep at only 3" mounting depth. With a few quick cuts, I made my own 1" deep baffles that fit perfectly. Only thing left is the back of the door card which will probably need trimming as to avoid nasty rear reflections.

I also bought a cheap set of Fountek FR88EX to use for now as a wideband in a 2way setup. These should be able to cut down to sub-1000hz and pair well with the 9" Dyn (heard they roll off around 500-750hz).

For now, they will each get 150 watts. However, I have a spare T4.900D (same board as my PPI 900.4) sitting around that I may throw in and give the midbass 450x2! Gotta love headroom. Haha. I'll see how they do on the 150 first though once I get everything retuned.

Finally, I may end up cutting up the A pillars for the FR88 and tweeter mount in a possible 3way setup. Got a spare set for cheap so don't mind some cutting. Pumped to see how it sounds.

Been contemplating going somewhat down the same road as you with putting 8"+ speakers in the doors. Do you have any pictures of the job that you did? I've come across this setup from CDT Audio and it looks like it may be what I'm looking for.

I'm curious if this 8" midbass at 3.5" depth will work in the door. I think one of the last times I had the door panel off I did some rough measuring and deduced that with a 1.25" - 1.5" adaptor that this could be possible. The 2" speaker would go in the stock mid/tweet location and I would locate the tweeter wherever it suits me.

I may do the same with the rear doors with a 2-way setup. Looking to add bass to the system without having to resort to subs (although I do have several in the garage). With three toddlers in the back and all the other gear to go around with us, this is why I'm looking at this route.

Thoughts?

Mike, I did grab a few pictures for reference while installing the 9. I ended using generic gasket material to seperate the front waves and focus all energy through the opening. Also, from the picture through the grill, you can see that only a small portion of the midwoofer is obstructed by the factory opening at the top. I had considered drilling out the top portion completely to open up the holes (like it is through the open portion) but haven't yet.

As for the available depth, my mids measure right at 3" from bottom edge to rear magnet. I have lots of room with my 1" baffles. However, the Volvos come with a thin gasket liner on the back, which puts it a hair below 3". On top of that, I added another treatment of gasket tape around the metal opening of the door opening to isolate to the baffle from the door, when compressed, which further reduces the effective mounting depth.

As of now, I am amazed out their output. I did go the extra mile to competely seal up the door skin by making a plastic baffle and generous CLD on both layers which is a must in obtaining midbass (less so thr CLD). Wanting to add some MLV and CCF but havent got around to it.

Having said all that, Im hooked on punchy, tight midbass and am looking to throw in either larger Xmax 8s or 10s. Im currently subless as well and can vibrate all the mirrors even crossed over @ 100 hz with 24db slope. Also looking at higher efficiency mids (i.e. 95db/1w+) but they come with their own challenges and most must have higher crossovers 100hz and up. I do still miss that gutteral impact from subs and am working towards a solution to run another unless the 10s do it for me.

And let me look up thise CDTs. I know they've made some decent stuff but my initial respone is, that while probably adequate, you could get better bang for your buck (even better outright) by going raw.

And you're on the right track by sticking the widebander in the factory tweeter location. What you gain in width and ease of install (vs the apillars), you lose depth. Always a trade off. One that I'm experimenting with right now. Currently have my mids and tweets up on the apillars but going to test out the door spots soon. It is really nice having 300hz and up all on the dash but afraid I'm losing out on width...may not be though.

Ive been wanting to scout the local ones here too. Id like to have anther pair, even the 6.5s or mids. Otherwise, youll pay around $100 for a decent set online. Still amazing considering the performance in my experience.

I know, I know...got lazy then busy with other ideas and it got moved to the backburner. Lol. Id like to tackle it myself but dont have as much time lately with all my other ongoing projects/hobbies. Ill hit you up.

Sorry. So much other stuff came into play for me since this topic that it got pushed to the back burner (diff issues, brakes, family obligations, etc.). Next project is to get new wheels and tires, but I've been circling back around to this topic in my mind lately.

Speaking of changing things up, I've REALLY been wanting to wrap my truck in Cement/Battleship Gray but can't seem to commit since my paint is good...yet.

I stayed with 17" wheels. I ordered these wheels Monday and I have to still get the tires as I've been debating to stay with 285/70R17 or go to 285/75R17. I happened to be walking around the neighborhood recently and saw someone with a 5th gen that was setup for Overlanding and the guy had VTX wheels on it (different ones than what I picked). I went and looked them up online and saw they had a garage sale going on so I grabbed the set of 5 for $770 shipped.

They basically fit the bill for me as far as size, center bore for our trucks for hubcentricity, and the right offset amount I was looking for.

I really like those. Been seeing them pop up some on here and several of the IG overlanders' posts. I think they're clean...really close actually to the Ray 10s...and those are probably my favorite wheel right now.

As for tire size, I too have been looking ahead towards my next set and jumping up to 285/75s. Seem to fit the bill with being just large enough but, as always, offset and trimming will vary per setup.

In other news, I'm narrowing down my color choices for a full wrap. After seeing a few recent, and amazing, wraps on here (looking at you [MENTION=50186]adio3x[/MENTION]) and TW, the mod has now moved up into my "inevitable" category.

Avery is still at the top based on great feedback and ease of use/install. However, VViVid keeps popping back up with their slightly cheaper price while still being regarded highly by most. It seems there newer stuff is much improved over their old stock as well.

I'm now waiting on several other sample pieces. Also keep going back over the satin/matte VS gloss wraps. Basically depends on if I want the painted look or not (actually like both). But for now, I have my initial choice, Avery Dark Gloss Grey, on my truck:

I always liked a nice grey. Reminds me of one of my favorite builds over on ft86club. His was battleship grey.

Sure! Glad I could help. Mine is still holding up great and I've not been overly cautious of using it and scuffing it up as normal. Plus, it only takes a few sprays to make it look new again anyway.

And I'm really digging that color too. Just need to throw the others on so I know for sure.

Are you doing it yourself? I want to get it done for my IS300 but I wasn’t sure about throwing down like a G for wrapping it another color...
