Crossbar Question

A question about the crossbars:

I will soon be attaching a cargo box to the crossbars. I am concerned that the clamps od the box may scratch or mar the crossbars. So my questions is this:

Has anyone protected the crossbars with anything? Duct tape, electrical tape or something else? The tapes seem logical, as long as removal of the tape does not pull off the finish of the bars. Has anyone used any kind of wrap on the crossbars?

I throw my surfboards on top of my car. I went to walmart, bought two medium sized bathroom towels, wrapped the crossbar neatly with the towels, then wrapped some duck tape around each towel. It was a cheap $8 fix and it lasted for about 6 months. Then I noticed the towels were getting pretty grimy. But when I tried to take the towels off, the duck tape was stuck to the towels, so I basically had to cut them off.

So then I went and got some foam material they make pro bodyboards with, specifically the decking material of bodyboards. See link below. 3rd page of PDF "cellu-cushion".

It's a basic Polyethylene Foam and works fantastic!

Go to Wal-mart and get a piece of flannel. Wrap the bar with flannel then tape if you're worried about it. The tape will be tape on material not tape on crossbar. I don't think tape would remove the finish though... My suggestion is probably overkill.


At Christmas time I put lights on my roofrack and use black duck tape. When I take it off in early Jan I hit some of the glue residue with Goo-Gone then some fresh wax, never had an issue.
