I didn't like the color at first but when i started to realize everyone and their dog was getting all other colors except blue it grew on me.

CWS in OMAHA
Tech made it to the College World Series in Omaha so I decided to take my dad and my son on a spur of the moment trip for a couple days to catch the first 2 games. First road trip in the 4Runner! What an awesome event!
We drove overnight there and back so there weren't any truck shots sans the quick pull off restroom breaks!
With my first long drive underway I got to learn the truck a lot. The front room space is ample and there are lots of little nooks and crannies I can store stuff in. I really enjoyed the technology which I never had in the my old 3rd gen. and it was quite nice to have on a long road trip.
I know I am running a bit bigger tires and a small lift but I was surprised how often it had to kick down over and over just to get up tiny little hills. It got really annoying in cruise control and I finally ended up just using the throttle myself on the way home. I averaged an underwhelming 16.5 MPGs over the entire trip. A bit surprised as I averaged close to that in my 3rd Gen with E rated 33s.
Overall, it was a comfortable trip and really enjoyed the truck. Was glad to have it over my 3rd Gen for the road trip.

My #1 complaint with my 2002 is the ridiculous amount of down shifting it does in cruise control. If i control the throttle myself i hardly ever need it to downshift for gentle hills, but the cruise seems to think i need it on every one of them. Its gotten close to red lining a few time because of it. I HATE it. So.....I'm surprised and disappointed to hear the new ones do it too. I figured it was because the older engine doesn't have as much torque or something.
But trip looks like it was a good time. Too bad we lost out but cool to go and to beat Florida.

On my way back from getting mine (5 1/2 hr trip), it never once took it into unnecessarily high RPM's but maybe it's because I wasn't on super hilly interstate roads?

Great time and venue! I suggest everyone go that is a sports fan.
I am certain the truck is just geared for optimal gas mileage and when I was going as fast as I was the tranny just didn't know where to be gear wise.
I am certain the E rated BFGs don't help the constant downshifting either!
Sold the 3rd Gen the day after I got my 5th. Was a sad day but I am over it now!

I have thought about doing that, but my 3rd is so close to being done, and then I can slowly build and work stuff out on the 5th. Your 3rd gen was a pretty sweet rig, so I can only imagine how well this will turn out in the end.
First and a First
Well I got to go with a good friend of mine to shoot a television show 'The Daytripper' in Big Bend National Park. It was my first time out there and as a native Texan I felt ashamed I had never been there! I had to drive my own vehicle out there and meet up with him so I decided to get there a few hours early and explore their offroad trails. Once in the park it could take you about 2 hours to get from one side to the other so I didn't get to explore as much as I wanted for times constraint but what I did get to see and drive was a pleasure!
The only real 4x4 trail is Black Gap Road and it really only has 1 obstacle that could be problematic for anyone. Most the other offroad trails are gravel type roads with the occasional washout or bend.
Besides killing every bug known to man driving out here, this was the first time to get the truck a little dirty!
The first bend in the road you have to drive through a very narrow willow and cotton wood creek area... I said good bye to my pristine paint job and scraped my way through.
Other parts of the park-
It was a great trip and the 4Runner actually did a lot better this go round on the highway. I don't know if it learned my driving style or if there just weren't as many hills but it was a pleasure to drive there and back averaging around 75-78 mph.

I know the feeling man, I was super sad to see my '99 go even though we had an '11 waiting for us.
My 97' was good fun and was a great vehicle but Lord willing, I have big things planned for this rig and should far exceed the overall ability the 3rd gen had.

What a cool experience for you and the kids. I was lucky enough to play in the CWS Regionals in College and stop by Omaha last summer with my Dad on our cross country trip. Both surreal and amazing experiences I will never forget.

I love Big Bend. I can't wait until I'm healed so I can take the kids out there. Love Daytripper too, I've lived in Texas most of my life but still learn new things from that show.

Those Big Bend pics are awesome, man! I've never been either and I talk about wanting to go every year but never go through with it. How was the weather out there this time of year? Did y'all camp out? The 4runner looks awesome out there on the trails as well.

I tell you what Big Bend has a lot to offer. Pretty neat place to go and stay in Texas!

Chet has a lot of knowledge up in that head of his! He is an awesome guy and the same in person as he is on camera. He loves Texas and loves sharing it with everyone.
Man the weather was crazy while we were there. Everyone made fun of us for picking the middle of the summer to go, but it ended up being nice and cool up on the mountain. It rained everyday we were there and made some things impassable and inaccessible. On the desert basin it was still seasonably hot but it was breezy and pleasant for messing around on boulders and hiking paths.
I would love to take another trip out there. You tell me when and we will go!

Sliders Install
I received my White Knuckle sliders last week in the mail. Took them out of the box and was surprised how heavy they were! They are beefy!
I went with the DOM, TE rocker panel, non KDSS, unpainted sliders.
Installation was super simple and was happy about the lack of 'modding' I had to do, to install them. Pretty straight forward installation with the only tricky part being getting the U Bolt installed on drivers side rear next to gas tank.
