Cruise Control - Nice Surprise

It remembers the last speed even after a full stop. Just tap the lever up once you reach 30+ mph. It's been many years since I've had a car that did not forget the last set speed.

No way! Are you sure? Tell me it's not true. That was one of the few features I could never figure out why Toyota didn't have it on my '04. It's a pain in the a$$ not having it for the type of driving I do. It's what I've been struggling with on how to mod but it's built right into the powertrain ECU. Is this a recent change or can others verify it is a '05 feature?
Off to the dealer I go because this is something I would gladly pay for. Hopefully they can flash the ECU memory for the change instead of replacing. Here's hoping...
 
I know my 03 has it. I've only used it once after having to slow down. It can hit the gas pretty hard to get back up to speed though.

Not sure about the full stop. I'll try it out soon.

If the '03's and '05's have real resume then I've been ripped off! My salesman and 2 service departments don't know their vehicles.

Just to confirm that we are on the same page (before I look like an a$$ complaining AGAIN at the stealer) I have already tried these steps:
I have the cruise on at speed and kick it off (either using the brake or toggle the cancel.)
I slow below 45 and/or stop.
I gain speed of 45 or more.
My resume doesn't return me to my previous speed.
(The only time it will resume is if I stay above ~45, otherwise I'm always resetting instead of resuming.)

If you guys confirm this isn't how life is (especially on an '04 SR5) then I'm definitely heading to the stealer to get it under warranty.

My '05 (SR5 V6 4x4) remembers/returns to the set speed unless, as indicated above, the cruise control is completely shut off. Slowing to a crawl or stopping won't erase the set speed. IIRC, same on my '00 Celica GT-S. Hard to believe there's an exception for an '04 4Runner...

I've just verified on my morning commute and it does function on a 2004 SE as well. I don't see Toyota changing the Cruise Control function between production years so yours may be faulty...
 
I thought they added a memory function to the cruise control after you shut off the engine (not cruise) and restart, that it would resume to the speed set before you shut off the engine. This was a new feature for '05 (I think).

I must have a dud. My cruise control won't retain the speed setpoint if I come to a stop and my engine is absolutely dead at anything below 2500 RPM. I'd love to sell this thing but I don't have a willing buyer and I don't know what I'd get in it's place. I'm grumpy!

Interesting. Just checked my '05 manual, and there is no reference to cancellation of the preset speed upon going below 25 mph. There are also other minor changes in language, such as a third entry for options to cancel the preset speed (namely pushing the ON-OFF button).
 
Okay, just checked my cruise control on my commute home. Took me about 35 miles before I could find an empty stretch to do it. My 03 does not retain the speed after you come to a stop (or less than 25mph).

Tested mine on a trip this evening and it behaves the same as yours.
 
Nearby stealer didn't know anything about this as a change. Looks like this is a change for '05 in the way the speed holds in memory in order to resume.
Found the following statement in a '05 feature sheet footnote: "Cruise control's automatic cancellation function allows the speed to remain in memory even when the speed drops below minimum speed."
This is a change from the statements in my '04 owners manual, as verified and pointed out by NoDak. I will investigate further and question a retrofit/upgrade to the '05 method with my regular servicing stealer at the next oil change visit. Might require a road test in an '05, if they have one, to show them.
 
Please keep us updated, as this has really been a pet peeve of mine with my '04 SR5. It has only been one a very few though. It will be interesting to see if they can just flash the onboard computer for an update. Thanks!
 
Update...

Got back from my regular service stealer and they also know nothing about this. Neither parts nor service were aware of a change and they didn't have an '05 on the lot to test drive & verify. I have logged a call with Toyota Canada to see if there is an answer.

Here is some of the content in the reply from Toyota Canada:

"As the Customer Interaction Centre is not in a position to offer technical advice, we can only suggest that you discuss this directly with the Service Manager at your Toyota dealership. Should they require technical assistance, they have access to a special technical assistance service."

I haven't specifically contacted the local service manager yet about this question (next time I go that way I might have a chance to stop in) but I'm starting to run out of local options to get an answer. Anyone out there with the '03 or '04 looking for an answer to the possible resume upgrade should try their local stealership service dept. and/or manager. Any Toyota techs out there willing to research this?
