Crush washer for oil drain plug

I recently changed my oil and filter....and the next day noticed an oil spot under the front of the car. I double checked the filter tightness and sprayed/cleaned off the bottom of the car to be sure it wasnt old oil dripping down. I stupidly forgot about the crush washer on the oil drain plug....it either needs to be flipped (only once of course) or replaced with every oil change. I thought i would share my stupid mistake with all of you so no one else here would run into the same problem!!!

I feel your pain...Just ran mine the 3000 mile interview with a constant drip. Purchased my truck used with 28,000 miles from an Infinity dealership and made them change the oil just before I took delivery (The owner had put 2,000 miles on my truck...owner of an Infinity dealership driving a Toyota, HeHe) Drove the first 3,000 miles with no drip...Changed the oil myself and no washer was on the plug so I didn't think to much about it. I'm absolutely positive it had no washer as I as very careful upon removal. How they kept it from leaking with no washer is beyond me.

I kept a good eye on the level for the 3,000 miles and it only lost 1/2 Qt. with no crush washer. Did some searching on the Boards and found out this is a Toyota Product and They intend you change it everytime you change the oil. Don't go to the Stealership to buy one tho since from what I understand they get around $1.00 apiece. I found a Web Site and got mine around .16 a piece. I ended up buying 50 at one time to max out my shipping charges so I'm set for a while.

This washer is some sort of paper almost like gasket material. I think the price went up to about .20 a piece plus shippinng but for that and piece of mind I'm changing mine at every change. Just changed oil last weekend and all drips are gone.

I'm going on 5 years with my original washer.....do my own oil changes. I do make sure the surfaces are clean and dry when putting the bolt/washer back in.

I should replace mine soon. I would not call it a crush washer either. And now that I think about it ...it has a rubber coating on one side. ?
