Crusty Battery

Battery works fine, health is good, but it's seeping crustys out of the fill cap and eating the hold down paint. Should I just wash it off with baking soda?

Yes make a mixture of water and baking soda and using a wire brush neutralize and take the hold down off and remove all the corrosion from it and the battery, keep using the baking soda mixture until no more fizzing, then get some dielectric grease and coat the hold down and the terminals to keep the corrosion from returning.

I did this to mine 5 years ago and no corrosion to this day.

Do not let any baking soda solution into battery.
Water should clean battery case. Use solution on the separated clamps, cables and bracket hold down.
