Cup hold - resizing it

I'm not too happy with how the cup holder is designed. There are adjustments for the cup holder, but it doesn't adjust for a perfect fit for most mugs. There is usually a inch or half inch gap. Does anyone have a good idea on how to fill the gap? Something that anchors neatly, but not permanently to the cup holder adjustment arms.

Maybe buy a roll of window insulation foam- the kind with one side is adhesive. Should look ok and the foam can be bought in different widths.
