Cup Holders for the 1st gen?

I am changing this first post due to photobucket blocking all of my images. I realized that it would be very frustuating to go through all of the pages and not be able to see pics of the final versions installed. They are posted below. There are a few options now available on my site at www.bh3dprinting.com and on my etsy page at www.etsy.com/shop/bh3dprinting I have a single cup holder design to mounts to the passenger side of the center console. I also have a single cup holder design that mounts into that square hole at the base of the center console. There is another double cup holder(in two different versions) that mounts inside the rectangular storage compartment of the center console.
Here's the single that goes on the front of the console by the dash. This only works on the manual tranny version:

Here's the single the single that goes in the square hole. This version will work on 2 of the 3 console versions out there.

If you need cup holders in a 4runner, you don't need a 4runner. That being said, I'll give you an A+ on your efforts. Lot's of folks riding in my rig ask where the drink holder is, I ask if their hand is broken.

Mine has a cupholder. I call it "baby", as in, "Here baby hold this for a sec. And you'd better fasten your seat belt for this..."

The 1st gen cockpit is pretty cramped. The ebrake is under the dash, so I think the best place for a cupholder would be where the armrest console is. There's not really room next to the shifters without it sticking way out into the passenger footwell, and things sticking out when you're bouncing around a trail are bound to get broken.

The automatic and five speed consoles are different, but I don't think the dimensions are any different. There's also a difference depending on whether the truck has rear heat. I don't think there was ever a 2WD 1st gen, at least not in the States. There were 2WD pickups with the same body style, maybe that's what your source is thinking of.

+1 on the armrest console. It's pretty small, and there's not much space in it, so I personally don't really put anything in it. I think some type of rubber dual cup holder that's in the armrest console would be really cool. You don't see it until you open it up, or you could just take the top part off. I can post a pic of the console and measure it if you want.

For reference: Here is the console I'm working with.

I'm not modifying the shifter surround. Instead,
(1) I relocated Console switches to dash (where drinks will not get spilled on them, and
(2) I'm turning the center console insert into MY cup holder. Need to do resin/fiberglas work to make it pretty...

Thanks for all the comments guys. I did look into mounting the double cup holder on TOP of the console lid. I have an 80 series double cup holder that mounts in that spot. I set one of my doubles on top of 1st gen console and the lip of the cup holders was right at my elbow. Definitely not going to work there. The 80 series console is WAY wider and far enough out that it doesn't come close to the driver. I had to toss that idea. I didn't even think about the cup holder going inside of the console. I will definitely look into that. Any pics of the automatic center console? Need to now how much adjustability I need to mount a cup holder on both or if I need to make two entirely different cup holders. Here is the single with cell phone holder for the 3rd gen sitting in the place where I think I could mount the same one but with the contours off the 1st gen. Please ignore the rough outer edges. I had just snapped off the 3D printing feet but had not sanded and acetoned the print yet. You can see the above pics for reference on a finished print.

There were a couple reasons why I thought that spot above was the best spot for a single. It allows full movement of the seat; which is super important on a 1st gen with only two doors and a rear seat. It also clears both shifters. The pic above has both shifters as far to the right and forward as possible. It does impede a tad on the passengers legs but NOT the driver which is most important. I think a double inside the console and the single hanging off the passenger side edge would be the perfect solution. That way the front two passengers have a place for their cups and the back row has at least one spot. I will need to wrap up this current design and then go back and borrow the back 1/2 of the console with the storage area/lid. Hopefully I will have both designs wrapped in the next week or so. I will get some pics up for feedback. Definitely want the 1st Gen crowd feedback before I finalize either design.

I like it! Im using a cheap walmart cup holder that jams between your seat and the center console, but instead I shoved mine into the map holder in my door. It works fine but I occasionally smack my knee into it which gets irritating. Ill definitely be in for one when you get the final design up!

Still looking for a pic of the automatic center console bezel. Anyone got an auto and willing to snap a few pics? Also, is there any differences in the manual and automatic bezels over the 1st gen years?

And no, the travesty of the 2WD 4runner didn't occur until the 2nd Generation.

3 shifter? Got a picture of that? I have seen a few trail rigs with the dual cases and the 3rd shifter but not a factory 3rd shifter option. Definitely need to see that. I'm trying to make something that can fit all options for the 1st gen. Still looking for the auto console pic as well.

I don't have an auto, but I could send you a pic of the whole center console area if you want. I'm pretty sure the armrest console things are the same for manual and auto 1st gens. I think that'd be the best place for some cup holders, but that's just me. :happy:

I have been working hard at perfecting the cup holder design for the 1st gen. It took longer than expected due to some of my machines craping out at the same time. I had to use the rest of my machines to fill orders and couldn't prototype much. I do have a design that now fits perfectly on the console. The next step is to get it installed in the rig and make sure there are no fitment/interference issues with the shifters, seats, or dash. I hope to get it installed and pics posted in the next couple days. I also need to find the factory gray color. Is gray the only interior console color or is there more? I had tried 3 paints so far but no match yet. I will keep looking. Here is what I have so far.

Subbed. This looks awesome. Could it work on either side for driver and passenger, or only the passenger side?

I have red interior, it would be cool if I could get this to match but not a huge deal. I also have triple shifters, but it doesn't look like that will be an issue

That is a funky color of red. Probably not going to be able to match that. I'm thinking I will offer two color options. The factory gray (if I can find it) and black. In regards to stability/strength these should have no issue holding a 44oz. fast food cup. There will be 2 strips of 3m adhesive and two screws that will anchor it on. It should be solid. I will be putting it through the paces when I install it this week.
