Current 4th Gen Owner - Considering a 5th Generation - Educate Me

And yes before I get badgered I looked at the sticky about prospective new 5th generation buyers but wanted to ask some specific questions to those 5th generation owners by beginning a new thread. Still love my 4th generation and is my DD but have had it with my wife's Honda Odyssey so have told her we are going to consider selling/trading in for a new/used 5th generation 4runner. In any event one of the biggest deal breakers for me is 3rd row seating. We need that for carpools and kids. I realize the 3rd row is not designed for normal size adults, which is fine.

While I would love to get a TRD Pro or even a Trail Edition to go with my 4th Gen Sport Edition, I understand the 3rd row only comes in the SR5 and Limited. Is that correct or will dealerships custom order one? If not, then it appears I am stuck with a SR5 base or Premium since I have no interest in a limited.

If I go the used route is there a particular year I should avoid due to certain issues? The only upgrades I really plan on are TRD wheels, spacers and maybe TRD Pro Suspension.

You are correct third row is only an option on the SR5 and limited. I have seen a couple examples were it is retrofitted however that is both a massive undertaking and I don't believe they have air bags in the same locations as a "OEM" 3rd row which would make it a non starter for me.

There is no year to avoid with the 5th gens the body style changed drastically for the SR5 in 2014 so that is going to be your biggest choice either the pre refresh or the refresh. IMHO the interior if the refresh goes along ways to make the truck appear more modern, the fish gill front end I can go either way on. I love my 2014 but would be happy with a blizzard pearl trail edition conversion in the pre 2014 body style

Instead of TRD wheels with spacers I recommend you check out the FN Wheel TRD clones that should have the back spacing you want for a more aggressive stance
 
I owned 2 x 4th gens before upgrading to my 5th gen so I have a bit of familiarity. I have the SR5 Premium with the third row and if you do go that right I'd suggest going for the premium. The premium comes with extra bells and whistles like the mirror turn signals and heated mirrors, heated seats and softex which I think is better than the leather in the limited. I don't use my third row since I don't have kids, but there's definitely a decent amount of room for kids. The second row also slides forward and backwards and reclines which is a nice feature. The second row seats are different with the third row also. A couple people here have added the third row, but it involves tapping bolt holes and changing out all the interior trim. I'm not sure if the dealer would do it, but it would be super expensive if you did. There aren't really any years to "avoid" per se, I don't know of any major recalls or anything affecting a specific year. It was hard for me to trade in my second 4Runner to upgrade to the 5th gen, but I love having the extra bells and whistles like the backup cam and touch screen which I had to add to my 08. Thanks very much for confirming and the detailed response. This is going to be more of a grocery getter than anything with the occasional camping trip that will require minimal off roading. Still want it to look good though!
 
Also great info. It doesn't appear to be too many differences between the SR5 base and premium but it's only a few thousand dollars difference plus my wife would miss her "butt" warmers from her Odyssey. I'll be keeping my 4th generation and handing that down to my daughter (hopefully) when she turns 16 in 5 years.
 
So official bump after someone totaled by 4th generation earlier this week.

Thoughts on 2011-2012 Trail Runner?
 
Sorry to hear about the loss of your 4th gen - hope nobody was injured. I was going to mention that my 2013 5th gen SR5 came with heated front seats. I don't know if it's that way now if you buy new; or area specific. There are aftermarket seat heaters you can install. There was a thread about it a while back.
 
Ouch that blows. 5th gen it is!

Hopefully the favorable financing rates make it a bit easier. Most importantly, hope you and fam are ok.
 
While I didn’t want the third row, I wanted all the luxury comforts of the Limited. Don’t waste your time on buying a TRD Pro suspension... much better aftermarket options are available (and cheaper). I’ve pretty much converted my Limited, and I love it.

Yeah guy ran a red light Wednesday morning while I had the green going north and he was going west. Not a T-bone but he tore my H-frame and that was all she wrote.

Just me so no injuries to family. Airbags didn't deploy.

227k on her and I was original owner in 2004. First car I ever bought at 24. She kept me safe!

So on to something new.

Looking at 2010-2013 Trail Runners. Found a few within driving distance:

1. Shoreline blue 2011 with 75k on the ticker for $20k.
2. Grey 2011 with 55k on the ticket for $26k (yikes).
3. Black 2011 with 143 on the ticket for $15k.

Going to look at Sequoia's today and 4runner premiums (I'd like the 3rd row option but don't have the limited budget). Wish the trail runner came with 3rd row. No TRD pro for me.

Shoreline blue with 75k miles is a friggen steal for a Trail... kinda a rare color as well. Jump on that! I paid 22k for my 2012 Limited with 86k miles (one owner loaded). And that was cheap for my area.

If that SBP trail is the one in PA, it's been for sale for months and the price keeps dropping. It's bound the be eaten up with rust if it won't sell. Clean 10-13 trails, especially in that color, sell within days. I had to buy one from CO and ship it to me after months of searching. The 10-13 trails are definitely the ones to buy if you can find a clean one.
 
There are deals out there. Just Picked up my first 4runner (2020 trd offroad premium) for $5000 off sticker. Then the back gave me 3% financing

Yep that is the one.

I've asked for undercarriage photos and honestly am not sure I want to make the 150 mile trek to only be disappointed and then just drive back home.

I bought mine on Dec. 31st and that thing was for sale then, I think for $23k or so. The SBP's are so hard to find and sell so fast that I can't imagine it's in decent shape. Like someone else said, at $20k with those miles it is a steal and would have been gone long ago. The week after I got mine delivered there was one that popped up for sale in Raleigh...it was gone in 36 hours and for premium money. I'd love to see those frame pics if you get them. Good luck to you. I would urge you to hold out for a trail if you can drive something else for a while.

Should be able to do 10-12% off MSRP and grab the financing special in the SE its 1.9%/60months
