Custom 2-3 Gen Winch bumpers

Been speaking with one of our own, Austin aka aha2988, and another designer/fabricator about a concept custom designed winch bumper for our classic T4R's. One that is not your cookie cutter ARBish bumper or so forth... Wondering if I am alone in not wanting a piece of pipe or an arb smile on my rnr...?

most people who dont want the cookie cutter bumpers build their own.
if you have a company make a custom one it then becomes one of the cookie cutter bumpers.

Negative nancy! I wouldn't mind a good looking mass produced plate bumpers for mine. As long as they are strong and look good. I don't give a f- if it's a cookie cutter or not.

Id call the stock bumpers cookie cutters before an ARB or [insert brand].

Not going into the specifics of the concept until its ok'd by Austin, but the design we agree on is very much beefy, rugged, and still keeps the mostly original look of the 4runner. Unlike the cookie cutter 'one design for every make' this is a design by us 4runner people. Fully functional, and wont turn your rig into a garden sprayer in the rain.

Hey guys,
I'll be working with the designs on this one, as im also in the process of designing a rear bumper with tire carrier for my 4th gen. Another member is working on a front bumper design for the two of us for our 4th gens due to the fact we dislike all the options available for our trucks aswell.

with that said, I'll need the measurements off the front of the 2nd gen 4runners so ill need access to one. If anyone's close by with theres let me know. so far nitewulf is the closest so it seems like its up to him to get these measurements to me lol.

Once i get a computer model design going ill post up screen shots to get some input from everyone to see what yall are looking for in your bumpers. Once we get a solid design its off to fab shop for anyone interested in what would probably amount to a group buy

Just bringing this up... 2nd and 3rd gens have very different front of the frames, unless you run something like this:

Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts

Im all for new designs...if you build it, they will come!

that's what I need to here guys! I have access to alot of 3rd gens I'm
limited on 2nd i do have a close friend with a 1st gen so if the front end is the same between the 1st and 2nd let me know I'll model his front end to fit the bumper profile to if not I can certainly try to get them all! price will be extremely minimal compared to options out there! can't quote anything yet before nailing down the material cost I can say anyone who opens there truck up to me for measurements will get an extremely cheap bumper front or rear bumper

1st gens and 2 gens are close but not identical.

84-(89 4runners) (88 Pickups) mount by 4 holes in the front crosmember, and 2 above it.

(90 4runners) (89 Pickups) -95 mount through 4 holes on the side of the front crossmember, but ALSO have 4 mounting holes in the front crossmember identical to the 1st gens. The body on these years also sits one inch higher than the 1st gens, so if you put a 1st gen bumper on a 2nd gen there will be a gap, and a 2nd gen bumper will not fit on a 1st gen truck.

All years should brace the front of the cross member if heavy winching is in the plans, as the nuts like to pull out.

This is the 4xi brace on my "2nd gen". Im only using the 6 holes on the front, the bottom 4 are stock, and the top 2 were added by the brace.

This is off Trail-Gears site.

This is their bumper on a 2nd gen.. Using the 4 front holes and the 4 side holes , making for strong side bracing and less load over all on the front nuts, a brace on a set up like this might affect how well the side holes line up. Notice the 2 tubes above the roller fairlead to make up for the taller body.

This is their 1st gen bumper, bolted on with front 6 holes, but no side bracing, one tube above fairlead.

And that being said... Id be interested in a 1st gen bumper....

Uhmn yeah, that would definately suck a whole lot. As for the new design idea, our design doesn't look like it was designed by a bored plumber or exhaust guru. It's rugged enough enough to shove a Ridgeline aside, and protective enough to not worry about lights or grill with the integrated full face brush guard.

I'm not limited to one design once i get a good profile model generated of the front end of all gens I can basicly design anything you could dream of on the front of the truck. as everyone likes a little something different. Unfortunatly this won't be a fast and easy project as ill be working on this in my time off work, and at the convience of anyone who has a truck for me to take measurements of. Ofcourse im limited to the fabrication capabilities of said shop that helps fap these bumpers up. But I have access to cnc burning tables, 12' press brakes, and industrial welders. As of now i would have to farm out any tube bending as i do not have access to a hydraulic tube bender....yet... will keep this thread posted on any progress thanks for your interest guys thats whats really going to make this happen!!

just updating the thread. Still haven't gotten the chance to get a profile of the 2nd and 3rd gen bumpers. I've been playing with some designs for my 4th gen but haven't really pushed very hard.

I'm working with a friends schedule to get numbers off his 1st gen, so all in all I haven't made much progress lol. still very interested in getting these projects rolling just wish i had more time to dedicate to it.

I've emailed rmiller about getting measurements off his truck so perhaps the 2nd gens will get on the drawing board soon!

I have been out of action with a shattered knee since Jan 14th, so long distance travel is out unfortunately. I still want to press forward with this as Aha knows.

So, sorry for my inability to contribute, but I will do what I can. Singtoe has seen it in person as I love to visit his shop.
