Custom Tire Carrier

Built a custom tire carrier with the help of PATCO. 2X3 .188 tubing with 1 3/4 DOM and 1 1/4 DOM for the tire mount. I found a 1st gen license plate bracket at the junkyard for $6. Gave it a fresh paint job and it looks new!

I'm wondering why you put the pin on the passenger side. Just further to walk to open it up. Plus it swings into traffic. I'm going to maybe build one soon and want some ideas and thought process. Thanks boss

I like the swing out coming from the driver side! Did you add a stop to limit the amount of swing around the arm gets?
Have you notice any difference in weight distribution with the wheel and tire being on that side of the truck?

That was the hardest decision. Pros and Cons for both. In the end, I wasn't worried about it swinging into traffic. It won't just open, there is quite a bit of friction between the Delrin bushings and the mount. Not to mention it won't open up much more than 90 degrees to the hatch once the stop is installed.

With the tire offset to the drivers side it allows for more visibility out the rear window. I also wanted all of the weight to be on the pivot side. Either way has it's advantages.

I've been asked that question by more than one person.

I bought the truck and it didn't come with a hitch, I never needed to tow anything with it in the 4+ years I owned it (I've got a full size diesel for towing). So we hardly considered adding one during the build.

I've thought about adding one, it definitely wouldn't hurt in those rare occasions I need to pull a small trailer.
