Cutting brakes

The ultimate mod. Maybe? Dous is going to be the Guinea pig for this one. As everyone is aware (I think) Dous's 99 4runner is 2wd with no locker or abs. He is fully capable driving it on some of the red trails at the local OHV park. I went with him to URE and notice that when he was articulated, when one rear wheel was off the ground , he would apply the parking brake to send power to the wheel on the ground.

Background info on Dous -He is a Student - He cannot afford a locker.

I have come up with a brilliant plan for him. I am going to install a second parking brake system for him.

Here is the game plan - Since his is a 99, his existing parking brake is off set toward the passenger side. I will install a second parking brake lever on the left side of his existing parking brake lever. He will loose his cup holders but will gain capabilities. I will get rid of the cable that runs from one drum to the other drum. I will run a parking brake cable from the new position to the left drum and the original parking brake cable will be shifted from the left drum to to the right drum.

Pros -

1 The ability to transfer the power from a spinning wheel to the wheel with traction.

2 Sharper Turns when all wheels are on the ground.

Cons -

1 Loosing the cupholders.

2 Setting two parkings brakes when needed.

I've seen it done with the hydrolics of the brake system and it works amazingly. Document it and report back!

For instance in this picture my passenger tire was lifting off the ground, selectably "locking" that wheel would have given me the traction to get moving easily.
 
Not a bad idea really. I've installed a cutting brake on my buggy, and it works great. Made for turning obviously and not crawling, but heck it should theoretically work.

I personally would get an actual cutting brake assembly though.
 
My 1966 Farmall 140 tractor is 2WD with individual brakes and it can do amazing things off-road. I don't think the adjusters need to have the same tension to work, and that would be my only concern. Keep us posted.
 
Me and Singtoe, well actually Singtoe did the cutting brake mod today to my 4runner. It went absolutely perfect, didn't take us but 2 hours. Singtoe took some pictures and even a video of us testing it out.
 
Yes, I have done the poor man's locker. It was successful. The procedure was super easy and effective. Here are some photos. The youtube vdo's are being loaded up as i am typing this.

This VDO - Durrel is trying to climb the side of my neighbors ditch in 4wd. He could not make it. He had to back up an hit it in a more straight attack. This was so that all 4 wheels would stay on the ground. He is using Maxxis Buckshot mudder tires too.

This VDO - Dous is trying the same ditch in 2wd using the newly installed cutting brakes. It seems slow but he does it which nothing except a vehicle with a locker can transverse. He is using 30" Treadwright returds.
 
It really was impressive to see in person. I was a bit skeptical at first. The theory made sense, but I didn't think the brake would be strong enough to make any difference. As you can see from the video, though, it worked like a charm. Pretty cool when ideas like that work out without too much trouble.

I was skepitcal as well, if it hadn't been so wet it would have been easier to keep the tires from spinning as much.
