CV Axle Center Cap Removal

DOes any one know how to do it???

Already tried prying and using a rubber mallet, no success...

I have, and my wheeling friends, have ground down a small chisel or screwdriver into a very sharp edge. Tap this edge into the seam with a hammer. work your way around the cap. Eventually you will be able to pry it off. If you have rust, spray on some penetrant oil first.

i f'ing hate those things, you get them off with lots of swearing,cussing,crying and throwing of tools.....seriously the hardest part of the whole cv replacement for me was getting those f'ing dust covers off...:sadwave:

like said above me, small small screw driver with a mallet slowly going around the end & some PB blaster or the like should help a bit. worst case just smash the **** out of it, it will deform and come free, clean the area and replace with a new one.....:vader:

x2 ^^ except I just put a little permanent prybar bend in the cap so now all I have to do is hammer the prybar in the bent area of the cap and pop it off real quick haha

haha, i ended up with two of them like that by accident..i stopped smashing them juuusssttt in time.....

lol yup. It's difficult not to dent em up especially if they haven't been removed in a long time. They are on there very tight! You just get so mad and say "fk it" and just do whatever it takes to get them off hahah.... that's what she said?!??

Yeah basically what everyone else said, mallot and a flat head screwdriver. Someone told me after I took them off to spray the inside of the dust cover with wd-40 so next time they're not such a b•••h to take off. Good luck!

cant say i'd recommend wd40. it seems to be a rust creator IMO. i'd just slap a little anti sieze on there and be done. that stuff will last inside that cap.

Just as Gerdo said - a chisel. The tapered edge helps to push it off as you pound with a mallet. I have cheapo dead blow hammer from harbor freight that works wonders for this. Tested yesterday...

i worked at a bike shop on a barrier island in South Carolina. We were not "allowed" to use WD40 because of the issues with rust it created on the bikes. every bike i rebuilt, never had wd40 used....and you could always tell which bikes did have wd40 applied because everything was rusted together...i wouldnt have said that if i hadnt had some experience
