CV axle related question

Hi Guys,
I just replaced the right side cv axle in my 2004 Toyota 4Runner today and when I removed the old axle, fluid started poured out. Can someone tell me what fluid that is, so that I can buy some to top off what came out? Not a hole lot came out. I would say about a tall glass full or alittle more. Is this something I need to be concerned? Do I need to go to Toyota to by their brand or can I get some at Pep Boys or Autozone?

That is the gear oil for your front differential. You need to replace it. It would probably be a good idea for you to drain what is left and refill if you haven't changed that fluid lately.

You can get it from Toyota and pay 10x more or just go to autozone, advance, etc and get it there. You could also switch to synthetic like mobil 1, amsoil, royal purple, etc. You probably won't notice much more than a few less dollars in your pocket making the switch, but a lot of people do it because they are convinced it is better because it costs more.

To add on to what Sungod stated, yes, you should replace that fluid. However, people switch to AMSOIL because it is a better synthetic oil and has been shown in third party testing:

I'm sure you are done with the CV change but to minimize this fluid leaking, jack the side you are working with high and most of the oil will stay in.

Also smearing a little grease on the seals or the axle shafts that come in contact with the seals can reduce wear on the seals.

Thanks for the responses guys. Where do I fill the gear oil into? Is there a location where I can fill the gear oil or is there a DIY in this forum on this subject? Oh by the way, how much gear oil do I need to do the drain and refill?
