CV axle still clicking after replacement

I recently replaced my CV axle on the passenger side on my 98 limited 4x4 and the clicking noise I was trying to get rid of seems worse than it originally was. I had to go with a Napa CV because I couldn’t find an oem reman part. I’ve already done the drivers side cv a couple months back. Any idea why it’s still clicking or could it something else?

I used 2 sets of Napa new cv axles in 2 different 3rd gebs without issues. Its possible it's something else. Or a bad cv joint. Was it new and not remfg?

It could be the carrier bearing or seal in the front diff.

Is a bad cv joint a common issue? Or maybe just bad luck?

I haven't seen a bad Napa cv joint in 2 sets but anything possible.

I suspect its possibly something else. I also can't see a seal making a clicking noise. Bearings possible.

How's the wheel bearing? Is it heavily warn?

Not quite sure how to tell if the wheel bearing is worn out.
I don’t have this truck suspension lifted, just a 2” body lift, so I don’t think the bushings would be a resolution. But I might as well check for excessive play in the axles, maybe the bushings could help.

What exact Napa CV axle did you install? Just curious.
I had both of my axles replaced last year with the Napa heavy duty ones along with OEM diff seals, and after install it made a little clicking noise when I would turn, but eventually it went away. If you're able to, could you try taking a video and uploading it for us to listen to? Maybe drive at slow speeds so you don't get a lot of wind noise.

The one I bought is listed as premium cv shaft. I did some further investigation and I now believe the problem is on my drivers side cv axle and not the passenger side. The drivers side is a reman Toyota cv axle. I jacked the truck up and spun the wheel. It sounds like a grinding metal sound coming from the knuckle area. I took a video of it to share. Gonna figure out how to upload it right now. Hopefully someone knows what the issue is.

Not quite sure how to tell if the wheel bearing is worn out.

Jack the car up by the lower control arm, than give the wheel some hard tugs (obviously, take care to not knock it off the jack). 3 and 9 o'clock (horizontal), then 6 and 12 (vertical). There shouldn't be any perceptible slack.

Popped the axle out of the knuckle and the oil seal on the inside of the knuckle looks a bit mangled (second time I’ve replaced this Napa seal). It kind of looks as though the dust seal on the end of the cv may have caused this when mated together with the oil seal on the knuckle. Could this be the culprit of the grinding metal noise I’m hearing when I spin the wheel? Part of the little metal spring inside the oil seal is now exposed because of some sort of rubbing. Little balls of rubber were sitting at the bottom of the knuckle oil seal when I took it off from the axle. Not too sure what to do here.

Wheel bearing can make metal grounding sound or they will whine and howl like crazy before they come apart and fail.

Hope this helps. If that wheel bearing is bad, the cv will be moving around up and down left or right against that bearing. Lots of times, you can feel roughness when spinning them as well too.

So after I took the knuckle off the cv axle and put it back together, the metal grinding sound went away. The clicking is still there though and it’s definitely from the passenger side with the Napa axle I just replaced. Had somebody stand outside the vehicle to confirm that for me. The clicking gets progressively faster as the vehicle moves faster. Is that the bearing? Gonna head home and jack it up to check for play in the tire. Will update soon.

Ok, so I jacked the front end up again and found the drivers side tire had a bit of play in it when I shook it horizontally (from 9 to 3), but not the passenger side, the one that’s making the clicking noise. I’m at a loss here, not sure what’s going on. Maybe both wheel bearings need to be replaced.

If you have play in the drivers 9 to 3 position. Make sure the inner tie rod is not causing it. As it could be tie rod play instead of wheel bearing play in the 9 and 3 position.

The clicking I see has not been narrowed down or found yet.
