CV Axle Thread Repair

Has anyone ever tried chasing CV axle threads with a die?

I recently replaced upper ball joints on my 97'. I took the knuckle out to have a shop press old joints out and new ones in. I guess a hub spline damaged a portion of an axle thread when I was putting it back in and now the axle nut gets stuck at that point about halfway in. You can see the damaged part in the photo right above the cotter pin hole.

Well I tried prying the cv axle out but it just wouldn't budge. My mechanic quoted me $100 labor to come over to replace it. I was wondering if a cheap china-made eBay die and handle like this and this might do the trick. I wouldn't try to make new threads with it, but I figure I'm just chasing threads, but I don't know if the metal of the die is hard enough. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

It should come out. I just did mine today and use a pry bar. That snap ring inside can be a pain in the A. I think you will be ok if you get those. Keep in mind CV from a Auto Parts place is 55-70 (Core is 100)bucks. Toyota is like 300 new. This should not be hard to fix at all. Just take your time unless you would rather the mechanic do it.

Thanks, but just seems like a waste of a perfectly good axle, not to mention labor. I'm trying to get my mechanic to borrow a die to repair it for me. I thought about driving to a shop but guessing the axle will pull out when I turn.

OK, I'm feeling like a bit of an idiot but relieved. It turns out the axle nut was damaged. I got a new nut and it went right in. I thought I threaded the old nut all the way before getting stuck but now that I think about it, it was almost all the way through so I assumed it was the axle.

I put the nut flush with the axle edge to protect the threads and pounded that axle out with a small sledge when I removed the knuckle. Should have used a dead blow hammer. Lesson learned.

OME suspension, SS brake lines, and new upper ball joints are in. Pics coming soon in a new thread once I get new tie rod ends in too.

I'm going to have to piggyback off of this thread since I can't start a new one yet.

When replacing the passenger side CV axle i accidentally whacked the end of the old axle with a hammer. The first thread or two were damaged thus not allowing the nut to go on. Since I used a new Master-Pro axle at the time, I was able to keep the old and now damaged one. I believe the one I removed to be original Toyota. Can the threads be fixed on this? Also, my drivers side has really taken a dump all over the place. I am going with Toyota this time around. Am I correct to assume they won't take my damaged one as an exchange, thus allowing me to keep the undamaged but greasy one I just removed. Thanks.

You can get a thread file to try and get the old ones into shape then chase it with a die

Thanks. A thread file would have been the way to go but I was impatient last night and decided to use what I had on hand. A Dremel. I just put on one of those brittle grinding wheels and tried to follow the damaged threads the best I could without digging into the shaft. The nut isn't quite free spinning yet, but any interference is very minimal. I could continue to clean it up more, but I don't think it necessary. As it was the first few threads only this shouldn't impact the integrity of the shaft. I just need to make sure it's cleaned up enough so as not to damage the softer nut.

I now plan on cleaning up and rebooting this shaft. Just ordered the boot kit this morning along with a new seal.
