CV clamp confusion 1 broken. 04427-60142 kit

Good Evening,
I ended up using 2 of my old clamps as they looked beefier and the new one did not fit and broke.

My old clamps were 3 fold over tab style and one crimp (small end outside CV boot)

The dual kit (driver & passenger) 04427-60142 had 1 large crimp, 1 small crimp, 1 large tab/fold over and 1 small slide lock. I broke the band trying to get the large fold over on the inner CV. I stopped and double checked the inner boot flats and valley's were lined up and it was in the track with the cup but the band simply wasn't large enough. I couldn't get it to flip no matter what I tried. Just to make sure I measured the boots (roughly).

The inner CV boot large end is smaller by 1/4" measured @ 4". I am pretty sure the large crimp is for the outer boot, check yours carefully if you do this and lay them out and save your old clamps by gently unbending the tabs. And one last thing, the new clamps were not as beefy as the OEM, Is Toyota starting down the path of lower quality parts ?

Had this same problem.

5th gen reboot kit comes with this clamp.

42345-60280 | OEM Clamp

This large clamp "A840C" for outer boot is shown as being compatible with 4Runners 2003-2024, but it most definitely is not compatible with mine. Too small and snapped while folding it over.

I ordered an aftermarket, but it hasn't arrived yet. My install notes and part findings:

Interesting. Can you confirm which type of clamp came with your kit? I see older 142 kits came with a different clamp.

The clamp I broke: 42345-60280

• I used 04427-60133 (5th gen boot kit) and broke a clamp for outer boot.
• OP used 04427-60142 (4th gen boot kit) and broke a clamp for outer boot.

I called two dealerships and confirmed, both kits use the same clamp: 42345-60280

• Old clamp with 142 boot kit: 42345-60120
• New clamp with 142 boot kit: 42345-60280

4th Gen boot 04427-60142 used to come with clamp 42345-60120, but this clamp has been replaced by clamp 42345-60280.

For whatever reason, my complete inept ability with these clamps, bad tools, or just bad luck, I have never had much luck with the crimp style clamps.


I used these on my last reboot and have been happy with them.
