CV Driveshaft Question.

Well lately my CV driveshaft has been making a popping sound and I can tell it's time to replace them. My car has 85K miles on it and each shaft is $65 + $55 Core charge. My Mom thinks that this is not an important issue for me to take care of. Can anyone chime in on this for me please?

Is it me, or is there SOMETHING different wrong with your car like every day.

At 85k, your half shafts should be fine. A pop? Sounds more like suspension or front end play. When a half shaft goes, it either snaps (the unlikley one) or the joint side goes. You know when that happens... it starts grrrrr every corner you make.

Could it possibly be you are "looking" for things? I don't know..

Anyway. A half shaft is pretty stout. Not as stout as a solid rear driveline, sure, but... still. Your description doesn't really match anything I have ever experienced via a front cv shaft/joint.

But, at 85k, you should be OK in terms of what it was designed to do. Do you do any heavy offroading? Because, yea that will destroy a front independent design. If not.. I don't know. Explain the "pop" more. Sure its not just hitting some suspension bump stops?

Or did you buy a beater?


Edit: Since your mom sounds like the one paying for it. :) HA, oh those are the days. You should at least tell her that since she bought you a full time 4wd, then yea... you gotta get the fronts fixed, if broken.
 
I have 90k and I'm on my 3rd set. I know one guy popped a shaft and it punctured his oil pan. Better safe than sorry IMO. I have a V8 lifted full time 4wd though. Probably the worst combination for front cv axles.

On a side note, popping sounds are usually ball joints. My cv joints would squeak when they were toast.
 
So i got a chance to check out knights truck. he has zero play in any ball joints throughout the entire front susspension he's relocated his sway bar to prevent any suspension componant interference. the only thing that looked bad to me were the upper ball joints. Both boots were seaping grease. The poping sound is only occuring at full turn lock mainly when sitting still turning the wheel from full right turn to full left turn at the end of the steering wheel turning the pop is heard from the front left of the vehicle. Changed out the CV's which were pretty warn for 85k considering he's running a 3.5" lift up front. However the poping symptoms remained. Has anyone had a poping noise and narrowed it down to be the upper ball joint on the factory UCA's?
 
Haven't had a popping noise from the UCA ball joints, but I've had a popping noise from the sway bar end links.

when you checked it out did the ball joints on the sway bar end link still feel tight; however, poped? or were they loose feeling like a warn ball joint would feel? I checked all his linkages and nothing seemed out of the ordinary other than the seeping upper ball joint. no play in the upper ball joint though just seeping greese.
 
Yeah, they seemed pretty tight when I gave them a good tug and pull, no obvious play or anything. However, I would hear the POP occasional when turning and going over bumps.

Pull the swaybar off and see if that gets rid of the noise, nice and easy troubleshooting step at least, even if it only helps you rule out a possible cause of the noise.

lol that would've been a good test, "douh!" haha :ybrick: I dont even have a sway bar on my truck, Im sure knights4 will see this and give it a try. he needs new rear swaybar links anyway due to the amount of rust on them they would probably snap under an extreme load.

Thanks for the input though for sure, I aways assumed if a ball joint was bad it would be sloppy, always a good way to make an ass out of myself haha.

Yea. The lift makes the angle on the cv joints much more extreme. I bet that is why you have yours going at a more regular frequency.
 
he's sourcing new UCA's to change out the upper ball joints as well as all new sway bar links front and rear. we'll have to wait and see
 
Please keep us up to date on the source of the "pop". I have an 05 with 85K and have had a pop for a while. I've had most of the possibilities looked at but haven't found the source yet.

It seems that the "pop" comes from the right front and happens as I turn the wheel to the right, as I back out of parking spaces....no other symptoms.

Thought it was the CV's because the boots were recently torn and replaced, thought it was the steering wheel stops, but right now I'm wondering if it comes from the brakes?
 
Well I'm out of town for about a week, but I have new sway bar links for all four corners. When I get back I'll put them on and I'll report back to this thread. If thats not the problem, then well see if maybe new ball joints (ucas) will fix the problems.

left wheel starts vibrating violently, feels like your running over something all the time. though it was tires, thought it was wheel bearing, thought it was the breaks, replaced the breaks, they were extremely rough. didn't solve it. I heard a pop noise every time you switched into drive or reverse, like a clunk. while driving down the road you felt like you were running crap over. I finally figured out the cv shaft was DONE. repaced it and all was well, now the other side is doing the same thing but I don't have the clunk, or pop. It does however decide each time I drive it what severity the wobble will get, normally it will shake the steering wheel at 60MPH.
 
i hear a rough grrrrrrrrrrrrr, when i turn full right.......is that a sign of a bad axle shaft?..just noticed that my cv boot on that side is torn too.

if its the axle shaft.....can i just change only the bad one [passenger]?..or i gotta swap out both?
 
Was there any definite answer on this issue. I have a 06 sport and I have the pop noise and steering shake at 50 mph. I'm taking it to the shop on Saturday morning and I would really like to tell them what it is and how to fix it.

i think the post above is the solution....will swap out my cv shafts and see, cos my symptoms have degenaerated from the grrrrrr sound to something similar the poster described above
