CV Fail. WTH?

Hey guys,

A buddy just had new CVs installed (NAPAs) and on the way home this happened! Shop of course is blaming it on the part and not their handy work. Any particular damage we should look for other than the obvious CV?

1st call...Ghostbusters.... I think he ran over Slimer

2nd call... Maybe NAPA? Might be able to work something out with them.

WOW, that sucks, on the way home!?! Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to prove it was because of install, if they did something accidently. Shouldn't be any other damage, just looks like the boot ripped apart and slung grease everywhere (not used to seeing green), axle looks still intact.
 
torn boot on a brand new CV is the fault of the part or the installer, boots don't tear like that unless they're punctured, ripped, or stretched out way too far
 
Got another pic. I think it's definitely install error. They say it looks like the wheel "wants to fall off" and this is what it looked like the first time they heard a noise and pulled over.

Look at the location of the clamp at the diff, its definitely to far for lack of a better way of putting it. Looks like it was rotating inside the boot again for lack of a better way of explaining it. Second time they pulled over a couple miles later, the noise/thump was worse and they found whats in the first pics.

Aftermarket axles are the biggest gamble you can take with these trucks, end thread. They either work(and don't often hold a candle to the OEM's service life) making you *lucky*, or this happens...
 
Your pictures are less than worthless, but installing half shafts can't really be screwed up to that level.

I might run a CVJ rebuilt axle, but otherwise only Toyota OEM axles, ball joints, and other 'important' parts.

if the shop installed them with the shaft out of the cup it would do exactly what you see in the pictures, and rip the boot all to sh*t. if the shaft comes out of a brand new axle, thats the fault of part, probably a weak retaining clip, but if it was installed like that, thats on the tech(s)

This is a parts failure. If the axle is installed in the truck the tech did his job, there is no way it could be in with everything bolted up yet the axle shaft isn't fully in the cups(unless it isn't even the correct axle).

People are so quick to blame techs, like he really wanted to install an aftermarket axle on Joe Blow's 4runner in the first place.

Even though we will source aftermarket parts for customers at the Toyota I work for, I will absolutely refuse to install aftermarket axles, rack+pinions, PS pumps, alternators, ac compressors, radiators, condensers, and starters.

in my personal experience doing cv's on tons of different axles its totally possible to install it not fully seated and then have it come out while driving with those exact results. I'm not saying the tech is incompetent or lazy, all I'm saying is that is possible. neither of us know what happened. like i said, at best its only 50% the fault of the tech, and this is coming from a former one
 
Whatever the case. It's back at the shop to replace the CV last I heard. I don't think the tech intentionally did anything wrong and I'm not saying the part wasn't faulty either. I don't think it was entirely a faulty part though, especially to fail within 30 miles. Just my opinion though. I'm not going to bash NAPA either as I've used their CVs on several occasions with no problems whatsoever. Just one of those things I guess.
 
I wish you had some better / larger pictures to look at, but if the axles were the correct part I believe I've done enough of these to say that if the axle were out of the cup the tech would've had a hard time getting the rest of the hub assembly back together. I think that if the axle were the right part, but not seated correctly, the issue would've been apparent from the moment the tech started backing the truck out of the shop bay with heavy knocking / thumping noises.

It also looks like the axle may be too short?? Was the right part used for this job? It could be a fluke that the inner and outer joints share parts across different platforms (why they bolted in) but the axle is a different length. Either way, that would explain the stretched boot appearance. I have, as well as others that say it, say to stay away from non-OEM good reasons. Nothing good ever comes out of them in the end.
 
Yea unfortunately since it's not my truck I wasn't able to get pics. I can only assume they are the right parts. I just know she called frantic due to a loud knocking/thumping noise. A few minutes later, kaput. Oh well.

Side note: I thought both CVs were the same (same part no.)?
 
Just heard from my buddy. Received this text from the shop:

..."One of the bolts that tightens the ball joint to the control arm is missing and Wil said he tightened it but regardless it missing...Obviously there will be no charge and you have my deepest apology for your stress"

Stress is an understatement...
 
Wow. That could have really been bad. That's why the FSM recommends using LocTite on those bolts. You're friend is lucky.

Even though the tech botched the job, you have to give the shop credit for owning it like that.
