CV Joint Play

Hey all,

I've been trying to track down a intermittent "clunk" or "pop" sound that usually happens when straightening back up after turning from a stop. Like when taking a right or left at a stop sign. On occasion, it will also happen during straight line acceleration from a stop. I've replaced sway bar end links and bushings, so I know it's not that. It almost feels like something is binding and then releasing, and it seems like I can feel it underneath me so that got me looking at the driver side cv axle. The boots are intact, but I grabbed the axle and noticed a decent amount of play on the inner side. When grabbing the shaft, you can get a ticking noise from the inner joint and it will also slide quite a bit outward. The passenger side has only a slight inward-outward movement and no play when you grab the axle shaft.

I tried to capture it in a video, so let me know if you agree that this play is excessive and that the inner joint is worn out.

Have you greased the drive shaft? It clunks like a mofo when it needs grease. Normally when you stop at a light or something, then get off the brakes it'll clunk pretty loud.

Yeah, that's definitely something I do on a regular basis, and this is a different noise/feeling as far as I can tell.

My inner is toast as well, not binding but the boots been gone for a bit and I daily it like that. I think mine has probably worn enough that its not binding anymore lol.

I'm a total idiot because mine is an OEM axle and I didn't realize how valuable they were until researching it. I finally found an OEM axle for $32 at a junkyard and I'm going to reboot and document that process. Look at car-part.com and try to find a CV local. Most can be had for around $50 at a junkyard and rebooted for $40, much better than $350 from toyota or $200+core+shipping for a CVJ reman.

take the axle out and take the boots off. inspect the bearings. if its ok clean and add grease. reboot and put it all back together. Takes me about 3.5 hours to do both sides. I do them every other oil change with over 200K miles and heavy off-roading.
