CV joint retaining clip-somewhat urgent

I installed new boots on my CV axle. The inner retaining clip was so worn that the axle just slid out of the ball bearing joint without any effort. In re-installing the inner joint, I put the new retaining clip on and it is much wider than the worn piece that came off. I cannot for the life of me get the inner joint over the reataining clip. I tapped it with a hammer but I dont want to damage anything. Any ideas? Somewhat urgent. Thanks in advance.

Make sure the new ring is for your axle. It should be sprung onto the inner axle. I have never done this yet so I cannot be 100% sure. I did see a video of a guy replacing the boots and inner rings and it was tight on the axle when he put it on.

If all else fails, crimp the ring together carefully with a pair of pliers. Just be careful not to distort the shape of the ring.

do you have a picture of what you're doing? I replaced my cv axles a year ago. if i see what you're talking about i might be able to point you in the right direction.

I got it in. Just had to give it a few whacks to seat the joint.
