CVJ axle spline diameter

I bought some CVJ axles to replace my stock CVs. Popped one of the old ones out and tried to put the CVJ one in, but no luck. I pulled it out and compared the new vs old, and the diameter at the splines is bigger by several millimeters on the CVJ!



Has anyone had this issue? I'll call them in the morning but for now I guess I have to put my old one back in...

Bummer man, are the axles the same length?

I haven't heard of this before, mine from CVJ were fine. I'm guessing they just screwed up when rebuilding and put the wrong inner on. The left one in your photo has flat splines to the end, and the right one (CVJ) has a bottle cap look, so something isn't right.

I didn't check the exact overall length, but they seemed similar if not the same. But on the inner, you can kinda see in the pic, the whole inner is longer than stock, by close to a quarter inch. I'll see what they say in the morning I guess

Well I called them up and they said they shipped me the part number for an '03+ t4r. They're shipping correct ones out today.

Great customer service, I think he just misread my first email when I was asking for a quote.

Been thinking about ordering a set of these. I like the idea of getting axles with extended travel boots. I don't DD my runner so when it does get driven it is almost always in 4lo and going through the full range of suspension travel. 3out of 4 of my OEM boots are torn and have been so for several months. They are still quiet, but don't think I want to reboot them after letting be open to the elements for so long.

Any reviews or input? Was originally thinking Napa lifetimes but thought the boots might be up to my use.

I think you would be fine rebooting. The stock boots are just old which is why they tore. If the CVs work fine you should be fine rebooting, I had a boot tear on me in Moab and kept wheeling and drove back to Denver on it and then rebooted it and never had an issue. Some people claim the non-OEM CVs are weaker so that's also a potential reason to just reboot.

I rebooted the one CV and it was fine, the other side tore it's boots a few months later and I said screw it and just bought an O'Reilly CV which promptly had the inner hub start rusting so I had to clean it and spray paint it. With that said, never had any actual issues with the rebooted one and the new one and I abuse the runner (or did) on an almost daily basis and fully cycling the suspension.

They quoted me $99/axle after you send your oem cores back, plus $43 per side for the boots. So you're looking at about $145 ish per axle. Shipping was $24 for the pair to Ft Collins so yours may be a few bucks more.

But that's for the '03+ years I'm assuming, since they quoted/sent me the wrong one. Should be very similar, if not cheaper for 3rd gens though.

My bad, I thought you were talking about getting NAPA CVs.

Yeah for sure, hopefully they'll get here tomorrow. I opted for the regular-style boots though, not he extended. I've only heard good things about CVJ so either way I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Do they send you a prepaid label to return the cores, or is the shipping back on the buyer's dime?

Shipping is on the buyer's dime, although to be honest I didn't ask so I guess they might be willing to send a label. But if the buyer didn't send the cores then CVJ would be out the shipping charge, which could add up on their part.

They did send a label for the wrong ones so I didn't have to pay to send those back (I'd be pissed if they didn't, but I figured I'd mention it here).

I never posted a pic but they pack them with styrofoam in the box to keep them in place and they looked good and clean out of the box. Seem to be high-quality.

Again, customer service has been great. They're quick to respond to emails, so if you have other questions I'm sure Steve will answer them.

Yeah, didn't have that problem with mine. Picked up locally (they're like a mile from my house). Still have my cores :| Hope they take them back after 3 months of not having time during the work week to return.

Anyway, hope the new ones work for you. Would have been pretty pissed if mine didn't fit after tearing everything apart.
