I see in magazines all the time references to the "motorboat" feel of a CVT and how they hate it. They praise CVTs that feel more like regular trannies in that engine revs go up as speeds increase under steady throttle. They seem to think that it's too unsettling to have the engine stay at its ideal operating point since it sounds like a traditional transmission malfunctioning.
My take is that under steady throttle a CVT should find the efficient operating point and stay there. Why hurt performance just to get the traditional sound? Aren't performance guys supposed to appreciate function and not be beholden to traditions? It's super smooth, gets best mileage AND best performance!
What about having virtual gears and a manumatic function? I think it's ok if you want to have the newest and best but still want to have the feel of the old-timey driving experience.
What's your take?
