Short story made long (sorry).
My introduction: Hi, my name is Bill and I own a Toyota 4Runner; long time lurker, 1st time poster.
2004 4Runner V8 4x4 Sport Edition - 192,000 very well maintained miles, minimal issues.
Pulled out of the neighborhood lightly accelerating and a cyclical scraping sound started before I got up to 30 MPH. When I say cyclical, it was like an out of round pulley with bad bearings – but it did not speed up with the engines RPM’s. I turned around and headed back to my garage putting a total of a quarter mile on the car after the noise started. With the engine still running, I opened the hood. The noise sounded like it was coming from the bottom of the engine compartment – definitely not the top and it wasn’t really any more prevalent listening from the wheel well; and then I shut it down. After doing a little 4runner.org surfing, I went out to push the truck out of the garage to line it up in the driveway for a morning tow to my favorite Mom & Pop garage (plug: Mebane Tire & Auto – they’re greatness). This is when I realized the noise was not related to the engine running or the vehicle moving; when I turned the key to ‘accessory’ to allow me to put the truck in neutral, the same cyclical scraping noise started again after 20 seconds or so. Hmm.
So back to 4runner.org – and after learning that the fuel pump is in the back with the fuel tank (I’m reaching for anything at this point), I go out to listen more carefully as to where the noise is coming from thinking maybe it is coming from the back. I turn the key to accessory; no noise. I start the engine; no noise. I drive around the neighborhood; no noise.
In the morning, after driving up to my mechanic (with no noise) and waiting for them to open, I decided they may be chasing a ghost and I drove to work and back today (60 miles r/t). No noise.
Any ideas as to what component could’ve possibly caused a medium volume cyclical scraping noise that doesn’t have anything to do with the engine running or vehicle moving – and then go away pretty quickly?
Any insight would be appreciated.
If not – this board is highly appreciated anyway!
