I've owned this rig for about 6 months and I figured its time to start up a thread to document the progress so far.

I got into 4Runners a couple years ago with a 2nd gen that I bought super cheap and immediately fell in love. My first car was an '85 pickup but that was 15 years ago and I didn't really appreciate it back then. When I bought the 2nd gen I realized what I had been missing all these years.

Mods: 15x10 Steelies, Daystar 2" rear lift block (for saggy springs), Aussie Locker, lots of dents and dings :)

After a few short months with the 2nd gen and a few mods I needed something a little nicer and newer and worth dumping money into. In comes the 3rd gen. It was SUPER clean when I bought despite the 200k on the clock and $3900 price tag. It was a Sport/V6/5spd/4x4 and I was in heaven.

My 3rd gen build thread:

ZMBYOTA Build Thread

I had a blast with the 3rd gen and it only deepened my love and passion for the Toyota off-road experience. But I wanted more.

I decided 8 years in California was enough time away from family so I bought a trailer and packed my shit ---- that's the first time I really, truly, knew the 3.4L wasn't going to cut it. Pulling it 2 hrs back to my apartment empty I was barely able to maintain 70mph, and 55mph with any kind of grade.
:ballchain:

Enter the 4.7L V8 :reddance:

2006 Sport Edition V8 4wd XREAS Cloth 142k miles $12,400. From northern Cali, no rust, super clean, bone stock. It had a mirage of lights on when I bought it, replaced the gas cap and bam! all fixed up and ready for the journey.

Trailer probably weighed close to 5,000lbs all said and done, definitely a heavy ***** and a loooonnnggg 3,000 mile trip. I averaged about 10mpg. But at least I was able to maintain freeway speeds!!

Made it back east with no issues!

First trip to my parents hunting cabin in over 10 years! It's in central Maine and I plan on returning very soon to do some exploring.

Unfortunately there was no deer to be had this year. :gun4:

OK! So, on to the 4Runner.

First thing I did was a set of BFG K02 265/70/17 as the truck came with bald summer tires and it snowed almost immediately after I landed back in the north east. I took off the mud flaps, trimmed the fender just a tickle and heated up the front fender liners to move them out of the way. Zero rubbing and they look great. I also added a 1/2" spacer lift to the front because I had it laying around and the rake is pretty back stock. I thought about doing a little more but I've got XREAS so I'm just gonna do it all at once and get rid of that junk. It's funny, when its really cold you can feel the fluid in the system doesn't want to move and the truck is very stiff until it warms up.

Also put in some blacked out eBay headlights because the stock were pretty fogged up and I didn't feel like polished them

(BTW these tires and wheels will be for sale very soon, you'll see why in a few weeks) :focus:

Next I bought a fuse block for the eventual wiring cluster **** that will ensue with all the stuff I plan on adding.

I built a nice little bracket that sits right next to the existing fuse panel in the engine bay.

Next I picked up a set of ditch light brackets from CBI, honestly mainly for the free t-shirt (I'm terrible at buying clothes for myself). Mounted up some eBay LEDs.

And then I took it in a ditch:

I bought a spare charging base for my Streamlight and installed it in the center console. Pretty slick if I do say so myself. :fishing:

Well that brings us to current day. Right now I'm in Utah at work dealing with these babies getting ready for the start of the season:

Mean while I get this picture from home where something exciting showed up!!:hail:

Stay Tuned...

That looks like some fun wrenching, nice rig.

Do you still have the factory headlights? Would you be willing to part with them for the right price? I need a pair to mod. :dancin:

I do, the lenses need to be polished but they are in good shape with no cracks/broken tabs.

Shoot me an offer.

Absolutely great looking 4runner...but come on man you are witholding some pictures on the Aventadors...what exactly do you do?!?!

I've been a mechanic in sports car racing for a while now, recently been promoted to team manager so I no longer get my nails dirty - or have any free time what-so-ever. :wtf:

Suspension is in, Cam tab gussets are in, spindle gussets are in, brake lines are in, everything is in. **** that was a long night.

Pile of parts disappeared

Gotta do the alignment now, seems all that caster I put in it to push the wheel forward is gonna come out because I still have a bit of positive camber. Hopefully I can keep it in the 5* range.

Anyone have experience w/ these Icon front shocks? the line for the reservoir was contacting the upper spring bucket when I put them in. I bent it up a little bit to clear but I don't know how much it moves going through its full range. Icon's website doesn't say anything about it. I have 1/2" spacers I may throw in there to fix the issue, it seems like a lot of guys do that anyway for more droop while keeping spring at a good preload and not over extending shocks.

Got her trimmed up just in time to head to the airport. Went a little HAAM on it but she doesn't rub at all. I hate rubbing. I eyeballed the alignment for now (been doing race car alignments for a long time) and she goes down the road ok. I got an appointment next week when I get back from work.

Oh, she's got stickers now too :artist:

Back to work. I'll put this here just for wadle.

Brandy new AMG GT3. We gotta tear it down to make it better than Mercedes did. :uzi:

Finished up the body mount chop. I had cut it originally just to fit the tires before I had to go work. When I got back I boxed it all in.

I can't believe some people pay $50 for a piece of steel!!

Got the limiter straps in there while I had the welder out.

Is it me, or do most people put the spring on the wrong side? Every picture I saw, the spring was on the bottom, where it does..... nothing! Ha.
