I know others have mentioned that there have been problems with units failing after experiencing extreme heat. Has anyone had any problems with their units failing or operating poorly after experiencing extreme cold? It's common for us to have -20F to -30F windchills in the Chicago area.

Don't know if extreme cold affects the internal batteries in some units longer term-but otherwise doubt cold would be an issue. Most of the units I've looked at are good to -40 or -50 at least. I'd be more concerned with living in Chicago...

Yeah, the only thing affecting the dash cam is ambient temperature. Not the "feels like" temp. Still, if you get a battery powered unit, you are wasting money.

my viofo has a LCD screen that wasn't happy on single digit days and took awhile to come on enough to be visible, but otherwise it worked just fine

Hard Wired Cams

Anyone have any experience with hard-wired dash cams to the OBD2? Looking at the BlackVue DR650S-2CH 32G

Have only bought the cable but haven't used it with my cameras, still using a 12v accessory connection and no parking mode.

Can highly recommend the brand though, maybe consider busting-out for the 750?

For sure the case with units that have a battery.
I use the capacitor version of the a119s, and it's pretty flawless.
Meanwhile, my other vehicles with batteries.. hit or miss whether they turn on in summer/deep in winter.

Garmin 55. No issues. I installed the parking cable. Very easy install. Tucked away behind the rear view mirror.

I used to run sj4000s front and back but after changing out cams twice within a year, I upgraded to the Falcon Zero F360. I appreciated the falcon until I negligently left my car unlocked overnight to find that some sticky finger took advantage and stole all that the could out of my truck.

I have since added the OWL cam to the mix now that it works with android phone. It uses an LTE network and records to a cloud.

This cam is more of a security cam that is continuously on and has sensors, triggered by the attempted opening of a door or even someone bumping on your vehicle.

It uses power via the diagnostic Port (OBD II).
You receive alerts to your phone when there is a suspected break in, albeit the timing of the alerts I have so far found to be inconsistent sometimes right away to 30 mins later. I want to think this may be because of network availability.
I am so far, still satisfied with this false sense of security

No, I did not experience an any issues with the suction cup.

My my only disappointment however is that the Owl powers down if the car is not moved for 3 days. I noted that when I parked at the airport for a week. I know Owl will be hiding behind the statement that the Owl powers off to save on killing the battery.

Though I am not electrically inclined, I have not taken the time out to call them and or to determine if the Owl shuts down automatically without determining battery status or if there is really that much of a drain on the battery, mind you the same thing happened to the Owl in my wife's Q5 also(we bought both cars in 2015 and retained the same batteries since purchase).

I also noted some pixelation when viewing regular drive cam history. It is not consistent but I have come across it from time to time.

That said, I still like the OWL concept thus far.

Thought I'd post up this story in support of a dashcam.

Traded my F150 for a new T4R 2019 LE on January 25. Pulled the Cammsys CH100b out of the truck before swapping and installed into the TR4.

15 days later, I'm driving to work on a highway and a young lady swerves into my lane, demolishing the right side mirror and denting/scraping the three front body panels on the right side.

Insurance companies take statements from both of us and the young lady apparently disputed my version of events. Dashcam video was quite clear as to what occurred and saved me from paying my $500 deductible.

Well worth the ~$300 I paid for the unit back in 2016.
