Thanks for the write-up. I've been using this for a while on my Android (Nexus 4, to be exact). I'm using the OBDLink LX by Palmer Performance (link). It's $69.95 and uses Bluetooth. They have some other versions which use Wi-fi. Supposedly BT doesn't work very with iOS, so i-Devices have to use wi-fi. I wish I had looked into this ELM version because that would have saved a lot of money. Who knows, maybe there's some other benefit to the LX that I'm not aware of.
Here's what it looks like installed.
The bluetooth option will not work on apple devices unless you jailbreak. If you JB you can use bluetooth which is better then wifi imo.

Very nice description of the product. These wi-fi transmitters and applications really come in handy. I have a head unit which puts my phone in the glove box, so I ended up buying a ScanGauge to have a 24/7 real-time view of my Trans temp and MPGs.
There are numerous places that offer ScanGauge 2's much cheaper. I'm aware that not many people know, and it is still expensive (As it's not $30 total), but I bought mine brand new at my local Advance Auto Parts for $110. I used the WD19 promo code to save $50, and chose my delivery option to pick-up in store, so I got it the same day I bought it, for $110.
There are numerous places that offer ScanGauge 2's much cheaper. I'm aware that not many people know, and it is still expensive (As it's not $30 total), but I bought mine brand new at my local Advance Auto Parts for $110. I used the WD19 promo code to save $50, and chose my delivery option to pick-up in store, so I got it the same day I bought it, for $110.

I like it, especially since it can tell you how much fuel you have...my gauge shows either F or E 
and the wife hates that with a passion!
Do you know if there are any limitations to the year of the 4Runner? If I recall, my 96 I wouldn't be able to get the trans temps with ScanGuage.

I just pulled the trigger on this, I had some paypal money so hopefully I will get the transmitter tomorrow. I am also curious about the years. I have a 99' and I thought I saw somewhere that it was 2000' and up for the trans temp.

I have a '99. I can check later if the trans temps come through the OBD. I don't think they do, but I haven't really paid attention to that. I primarily use it for fuel economy and occasionally for power/torque stuff just out of curiosity.
On another note, DashCommand (and others) allows you to create your own PID scripts. So, essentially, you can take a number of raw data parameters to calculate something else (e.g. f(fuel rate, mph) -> mpg). If anyone in their research figures out how to create their own or where to find some pre-written codes, I would appreciate it.

Let me start off by saying I had no intentions of bashing Scanguage! I may have come over as overly critical. I'm sure it's a fantastic product! There's a reason everyone has one! I couldn't care less what you all buy! I created this to be exactly what the title states. An alternative. And wow! That's a great price! Had I have known prices like that existed this review may not exist!! Lol

No problem! To answer your question, yes, OBDII ports began being put into vehicles in 1996, and as far as I know, they are all the same throughout our 4runners. Like I said earlier, mine won't even show transmission temps, so I doubt a '96 will.

Oh, I didn't take any offense. I was just making aware that you can find SG's for less than $160. But these wi-fi/bluetooth transmitters are really neat. Wish I could have taken that route, as they usually come with many bells and whistles. Good review by the way.
I may have overlooked it, but can you access ABS codes through the Torque app or the aforementioned(DashCommand) app?

I pulled the trigger too, but initially at least they gave me a delivery date of June 4th, :wtf: Did you get the Android or iOS version?
I ordered the Android version. Already downloaded Torque, but of course it's useless till I get the transmitter.

^ Not sure about the Torque app, as I don't have an android, but for DashCommand, yes, it will read ABS codes.

I got the wifi version. Not sure if it was for andriod or apple, but I didn't think it mattered. I got notice it was shipped so I should have it tomorrow. I also downloaded the dashcommand app.
I got the same delivery date. Looking forward to messing around with this, think I'll just use my old iphone 4 as my dedicated music and scan tool.

I have a scangauge in my little Saturn. Its invaluable. However I've been hunting for a iPhone app that's portable.
BlueDriver and this DashCommand are the only value options to me and Dash is far cheeper. Only advantage of Blue is its Bluetooth and they paid apple the money for their Bluetooth connectivity. Cause iphone connected to anything wifi wrecks your ability for data. So while use of the ELM is taking place no text or email. Just phone service.

I just downloaded the app on my galaxy s4. I downloaded the free version to see if I liked how the app ran just by itself and it works pretty good so far and there is a LOT of custom gauge styles that you can download right through the app. The free initial version is for only evaluation mode. Im guessing that all it will do is check smog readiness although I can go to all the other parts of the app. Time to buy an OBD II connector and see how she works!

The Torque Pro is a grate app for android. My brother has it and it seems to have more features than DashCommand.

I checked to see if the Trans Temp came through last night and I had no luck. I'm sure you could add a sensor somehow if you really wanted to.
I tried Torque, DashCommand and a few others on my Nexus 4. I decided that DashCommand was the best out-of-the-box solution because of it's Dashboards. Torque requires you to build and develop your own gauges and that just seems like way to much effort. DashCommand has the same mode where you can create your own pages of guages, but most of mine time is spent in the Dashboard.

Check out the app Engine Link in the app store (for iPhone). You can also get around Apple's Bluetooth connectivity issues if you're phone is jail broken. That's what I did, and use a Bluetooth-OBD2 adapter. Check out the link in my signature if you want more details.

Jumped on the bandwagon as well.. Ordered it on amazon with two day prime shipping.. ELM327 and dashcommand... Mounted using an Akron iPad vehicle mount
