datalogging a 4runner?

I'm new to 4runners but have a lot of experience with DSM's (Eclipse, Talon). Are the older gen 4runners OBDI or II? Is there a way to get into the ECU to check the A/F ratio and such? My fuel delivery is really bad and I'm trying to figure out what my ratio is like.

seeing how obdII only refers to vehicles 1996 or newer

the only question would be what year do you fall under
 
God, you're right. I didn't even think that my 4runner could be THAT OLD! Well, have any 95 or lower 4runner users logged their car? Or found out how?
 
if you are concerned about air fuel ratio, you can always just get an egt gauge/sensor and monitor it separate from tapping into the ecu.
 
Datalogging does so much more than just air fuel ratio though. EGT gauge helps, but checking all of the engines vitals is so much better by using a datalogger, especially on a 10 year old car.
 
You're right, "datalogging", as I anticipate you're referring to, does track a lot more than just air/fuel ratio. "Datalogging" as you're probably referring to is the data that OBDII interfaces can spit out.

I agree, that's really cool stuff. I'm a Computer Engineer, and when I get a post '96 vehicle, you bet I'll be using some FPGA's to create a dedicated digital display of all of the cool bits of information that is available. But I wanted a 4runner, and that meant getting a 2nd gen, on my budget. So, OBDII isn't an option.

Fear not, you are not without recourses... if you want gadgetry and active information you can:

1) put in all of the sensors and do it all your self

2) Use the sensors you were born with... you can do a great job of keeping abreast of the potential problems in your car without things telling you if you're willing to do the work.

The problem is, the '95 and earlier computer just isn't configured to do what you want it to do using a non-proprietary protocol like OBDII. I don't like this answer much, and I'm taking route 1. I'm tapping the sensors that are in the vehicle and interpreting the information. My favorite part of the project is measureing the pulse width of the fuel injection, and figureing the gas economy on the fly. It's really quite a bit more accurate that way than the "fuel computers" on other cars that use other methods. But then again, I'm an engineer, and it's what I do. If you're more specific as to the information, I can help you find ways to get it and display it. If you just want the gadgetry, I can't do much for you.

OBD I can still be tapped into to find just about as much information. I just have no clue where the pinouts are on 4runners opposed to 1st gen DSM's (90-94). Do you know where the pinouts are on a 95 4runner?
 
I'm wondering what software or scan tool you're going to use. If indeed you're right, I'd love to find out more about it. Whenever I've heard the term "OBDI" used, it's usually referring to a semi-standard, with each manufacturer using a propiretary protocol. I'd love to hear more about what you're doing.

I was curious as to what you're refering to when you say "1st gen DSM"... now I understand. It looks like it refers to the ChryCo (dodge/eagle and stuff) and mitsubishi line of reasonably-fast cars.

If you've found something that'll work for 'yota's, like I said, I'd love to hear.

Ya, sorry about that, DSM refers to the Turbocharged Mitsubishi Eclipse (Lazer, Talon)-EXTREMELY modified cars. From what I've found, all of the software (tunerstein and whatnot) for DSM's is.....meant for DSM's only (Duh)! So unless some computer programming wizard all of a sudden became interested in T4R, nothing will ever happen as far as logging goes. Any other ideas from other people?
