Today i've decided to work on the Air Filter

EFI Fuse reset
Deck Plate mod
MAF sensor cleaning
New Air Filter - Amsoil TS-115
Air Elbow

Do I have everything covered that i'd want to do at the same time?


Also if you do the Deck Plate mod do you want to also remove the Air Elbow? Is having both done a good idea?

No idea to be honest.

I was reading around and found a DIY stating that it was better.

I couldn't find an Amsoil, so I bought a K+N air filter... if you think i'm wasting my money, tell me why before I install it!
 
I've actually tried them all . I shelved the one I bought from Burtman Ind and shelved my K & N as well . I just run the Toyota OEM now . I just don't care for the wash and re oil air filters . I doubt theres anything wrong with them though. It's just after wrenching for 30 years I have come to the conclusion that if mfgers thought something was way better they would have put it in themselves. Same way I feel about Seafoam and all those kind of additives ,if you use quality fuel and oil you shouldn't have to use additives like those . I think if Toyota thought it was a great idea it would say so in the manual. Just my 2 cents man .

The only thing I have used over and over is STP oil treatment when I'm rebuilding an engine and the only reason I started doing that years ago is when I observed John Forces mechanics using it when they put together his nitro engines :D . Figured it wouldn't be a bad thing to use if they trust it ;)

I think the reasoning behind NOT doing the elbow is that IF you are going to do the deck plate mod, you are already opening up the airflow by a large amount. If you are doing the elbow you are not going to get a significant increase over the deck plate. If you were not going to do the deck plate then by removing the 90* in the elbow you would see a little increase, but you would have it issue of sucking water from your fenderwell.

It seems that the deck plate was a great alternative Over removing the elbow because you get more airflow AND it is easily reversible by installing the plate for water crossings... So in essence it negates the elbow restriction, is easily reversible, therefore do the deck plate and not the elbow.

Make sense?

Maybe i'll just do that. It saves me 85 bucks.

Does the OEM filter need to be changed at all? If so when?
 
I put a new one in every year . Check your manual but depends on your driving too. Dirt roads a lot or hwy only ? I get an OEM one at the dealer here for under 20 bucks so its cheap insurance at that price . Maybe it's just me but I found the oil saturated ones influenced my MPG to the negative side .

I just bought it a week ago. But it looks like it was mainly city driven. Myself will be a mixture of hwy and dirt but mainly hwy. I'm sure it hasn't been replaced, so i'll go pick one up at the local dealer.
