Daytime Running Lights?

I'd like to have daytime running lights on my '04 since there are lots of old folks around that can't see anything much and will hit you if you don't have your lights on. Lots of people drive with all their lights on but I think just running lights would be good enough. The manual says there was an option for daytime running lights that consisted of having the headlights stay on at reduced brightness during the daytime. I think that would only amount to installing a relay somewhere but I can't find any reference to it in the wiring diagrams. For now I have the fog lights wired up to come on when the ign. switch is on but having the headlights on would be better. Anyone know how they did that? Thanks.

Never mind, I found in the FSM where it says that if you have that option you still need a Toyota Diagnostic Tester Kit and CAN Interface Module Kit to turn it on or off. It looks like even if I had that option I could never turn it on.

Yup was just going to say this. Every 4th gen has the ability to turn DRL on or off but it's got to be done by the dealer. If you have a good relationship with your dealer they might do it for free. If you bought it used or somewhere else probably not so much.

Edit: And BTW, it's just the turn signal markers that stay on all the time.

I don't know any dealers but maybe they would do it when I take the vehicle in for the floor mat recall?

There is a mod that will turn your fogs on - I dont have the link. My 2004 didnt have DRL so I went with the quick 6$ mod.

Like I said, I already wired the fogs to turn on with the ign. switch. They are down low and not easily seen in the daytime though.

DDL's on clear sunny day just plain annoying. I'm glad that I dont have that option on my 04.

I think that the angel eyes (BMW) or led strips (Audi, Mercedes) are noticable without being annoying. Maybe it's once you get up in the color temperature that I like - 4300K to 6000K or so.

I'm not sure why they are annoying but my feeling is, I want to be seen. There is no question which vehicle is more noticeable with a quick glance before pulling out; the one with lights on. With so many people doing everything BUT driving while driving, it would seem an advantage to be more noticeable. Just a thought.

Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) have been required on all vehicles sold in Canada for the last 20 years ... my 03 has the turn signal lights as my DRLs :)
