No. From what I understand the "decoder" really just functions as a capacitor to allow constant 12v (full brightness). I didn't want that, so didn't install them. There is some flicker/flash if you're looking for it or recording with a camera. But I don't believe you need the decoder. If these were several hundred bucks a pair then I might for the longevity, but since it's only $90, I'll eat it if they fail due to the fast on/off cycle of pulse voltage DRL.

I see that the saber pro comes in 40w and 50w for plug and play in the high beam/DRL location. I should stay away from the 50w due to too much heat? I also see folks saying there is minimal flickering when in DRL mode? Will the decoder that is sold with this kit for 19.00 resolve any flickering or is the decoder for something else? Thank you.

Saber Pro 50 Watt
I installed 50W bulbs in the DRL/High Beam socket. After one month, there are no issues with the heat dissipation. I did not install the decoder. The flicker is occasionally noticeable, in particular:
- when watching the reflection off cross-traffic at a stop light
- lighter colored cars (e.g. white, silver, chrome trim, etc.)
- if I stare at them directly (which never occurs while driving)
I noticed they caught the attention of local law enforcement. A cop was staring at me while we waited at opposite sides of a light, and I did not surmise he was admiring the car. SoCal rules are strict about aftermarket lights. Lucky me, this particular cop wasn't bored enough to stop me and ask questions.
They work well as a high beam option. These lights are SO bright I changed my driving habits: When it's dark, I don't flash my brights at anyone, anymore, unless I REALLY need to get their attention.

I have the 50w and love them. 40w was good too but flicker a bit more.
