DDM HID ballast? bad one?

Just wondering if I just got a bad set or a bad one or this is how it works out on the 4runner. With my 4runner I leave my lights on the automatic setting, when it gets dark enough and the lights pop on the right head lamp will not pop on, the left does, but the right will not. I have to physically go to the switch and turn the lights to the off position and then back to on and cycle it to get the light to pop on. This also sometimes happens when starting the truck up when it is dark out. All connections are tight. Are these just cheap ballasts? It does it periodically with the drivers side also but not as much as the passenger side. The passenger side will always act up. Is it something with the automatic setting?

Sounds like you might need to use a relay harness to power your ballasts. Buddy of mine had the same issue on his F250 and he would have to flip the headlight switch a couple times to get both ballasts to come on. All the problems went away after he used a relay harness that powers the ballast directly from the battery.

@Runner27 - I don't think so? Maybe that might be the case for 5th gen, but at least for my '04 I have to turn on the headlights myself otherwise daytime lights are on. I know the genesis coupe's headlights turns on but it's an '08. Wish I had the same feature for my 4R also.

i think only Limited models have the automatic lights. I could be wrong. Mine's a 2005

Correct, I have a 2003 limited. I was not aware the other models did not come with this option.

Maybe a relay would work, I am not sure how I would set that up though. I know Xenondepot actually sells kits that have the HID components hooked up to the battery, or at least they did. Might have to look at there.

I've got an 05 Limited, V8, 2WD with the auto-lights for nighttime. It's annoying when they automatically come on when you are in a parking garage, even if it's daytime. I still love the feature, though!

Do you mean day time running lights? If so, I am not sure where you got that from...

It has to do with the ballast. I have the XenonDepot Xtreme HID kit installed in my 2011 4runner (surprise, surprise) and do not have the relay harness installed. I have zero problems with the auto feature. Xtreme ballasts have a super low starting draw and have a broad operating range.

The kit you show though comes withe the relay harness, did you just not install it? Do you know what the starting draw is on those ballasts?

Hi,

The Xtreme kit does come with a relay harness as some vehicles absolutely require one to be used (otherwise an error code is thrown). Also, some customer prefer to use a relay harness to ensure the ballasts always receive a constant 12V. Xtreme ballasts have a peak starting draw of approx 4.5-5A.

The OP has an 03 with reflectors. Its still not a good idea in 06+ halogen projectors. Projector retrofits :thumb3:, they can be done in less than a day

Less than a day? You mean buy the complete retrofit kit, open the headlight, swap the projectors and brackets in, seal it back and plug in the harness?

I'm thinking about doing a retrofit that's why I ask.
