Dealer charging $110 for diagnostic while t4r is under extended warranty.

Hey guys I've had issues with my other vehicles before and never have they charged me for diagnostic. Is that normal now? I have about 55k on my t4r and I'm at a local Toyota dealer having my vehicle checked for a shudder when accelerating from a stop and vibrations which has not gone away despite trying new wheels and tires. I did purchase the Toyota extended warranty 8 years/75k miles. The tech I spoke with told me it would $110 diagnostic fee if it were just an issue with my wheels or tires. Which I told him I didn't think it was because I've been to discount tire 3 times in 2 weeks to balance/rotate and even purchased new set of tires. Went from duratracts to bfg ko2 and it's a little less but the vibrations are still there.

Thats standard practice these days. If they determine that the shudder is from the truck itself, usually they waive that fee. If its not an actual Toyota defect, you'll get charged.

in my experience, extended warranty is not a bump to bumper warranty like the 3 year / 36k miles that originally came with the vehicle.

so, they will want to charge a diagnostic fee.

i had bfg kos and had to get one replaced because it was 'off'... i have read that others, too, have had the same experience.

Common practice, extended warranty doesn't usually cover diagnostic fees until it's determined if the failure is warrantable.

dealer just called, driveshaft needs replacement due to excessive play which caused the thumping on stop and go. The vibrations are being blamed on my wheels and tires. I just had them balanced by discount tire. 1 of my bfg ko2 that i just purchased also had to be replaced because they were out of round, 2 days after buying the set. I suppose the only option left right now is to slap on some stock wheels and tires and take it for a spin.

Are the vibrations only while on the gas? Hit the brakes? I wouldn't be surprised if the driveshaft fixed your vibrations also.

vibrations are there in all speeds and rpm but a lot more pronounced at 60mph. Also when i accelerate from stop there was a a stutter at times.

actually standard warranty covered it. powertrain warranty is 60months or 60k miles. My wheels weren't an issue, they just blamed it for the vibrations at 60mph.

I had aftermarket tires and wheels when I had my drive shaft replaced under factory warranty/TSB.

When I moved to Chicago with my wife, I took my 4Runner to the local Toyota dealership for it's first service. I mentioned at the time the driveshaft clunk, and was told the same thing. Personally I don't care if it's standard practice or not... if I notice something out the ordinary while driving my car during it;s warranty period I'm not going to pay money to have them check it out. That was the point of purchasing a new Toyota.

My bumper to bumper ends this fall, and I have a couple things I need them to look at that won't involve the diagnostic fee. However if the driveshaft clunk becomes more of a problem between now and the end of the powertain warranty, I will make it a point to address the diagnostic fee.

Personally I don't care if it's standard practice or not... if I notice something out the ordinary while driving my car during it;s warranty period I'm not going to pay money to have them check it out. That was the point of purchasing a new Toyota.

They do not charge diagnostic fee within the 3yr/36k miles. It is a thing for the extended warranty.

Elmhurst Toyota's service person told me at my 20k oil change, with less than 2 years of ownership since purchasing new, that I could leave the vehicle for the driveshaft clunk and that if they found something it would be covered under warranty and if not there would be a diagnostic fee that I would have to pay.
