I love my 4runner, but the loud beeps when locking/unlocking with the key fob have been driving me nuts since I got it. The manual says to contact the dealer about them and I have seen multiple posts stating that the dealer has the ability to turn the volume of these beeps down, or even off completely.
After reading this, I contacted the dealer and was quoted $50 to get it hooked up to their Techstream Scantool to make these changes. It's a one time charge, so I figured it was worth it since I could go back anytime to make any other adjustments I want.
I dropped the 4runner off this morning and let them know that I wanted the beeps turned off and the DRL's set to manual control. They said the beeps would be no problem, but that the DRL's might not be able to be turned off due to DOT something or other. This didn't bother me since the biggest issue was the beeping.
Well, I just got a call from the service manager saying that the DRL's can now be controlled manually, but that they couldn't find a way to turn off the beeps or adjust the volume. I told him that I've heard of many other 4runner owners having this done and pointed out that it even mentions contacting the dealer for this in the manual, but he still didn't seem to think it was possible. He said that their tech went through all of the audible options and that this just wasn't there. He also said that not all 4runners have this ability, even within the same model year.
Does this sound right? Is it possible that the tech just didn't know where to look? Mine's a 2004 Limited V8 if that makes a difference.
