Dealer lost my 2014 SR5 Prem, now offering 2015 for $200 more

I can't believe that they would try to squeeze an extra $200 out of you on a $34,XXX purchase when they screwed up. People these days. If it is "nothing" (as others have mentioned and suggested that you pay), then make them cough up the extra cash.

This is what happen if you live in the Chicago area. Dealers here are notorious vultures. I had a Toyota dealer playing bids with me on a same vehicle I was trying to buy with another person. They made it so obvious that I just walk out. Its not the last 4runner on earth. They make you think that they gave you a fair price at first. But when it comes to financing, talk about a sh1t load of dealer reserve profit.

When I bought my 4Runner, I wanted SR5, 3rd row, 4x4, and NOT white or black, so there were surprisingly few options in my area. I went to about 8-10 dealers for quotes in the area, and about 5 came back and quoted me a price on a "vehicle they could get" that met my specifications. Come to find out they were all quoting me on the same vehicle, which was in another state several hundred miles away (but still in the Gulf States region).

Even after the dealer I chose sent a guy to pick it up, I had other dealers calling me swearing they could put their hands on the vehicle (same VIN). I was almost a little surprised when it showed up - I was almost expecting someone else to have bought it out from under me.

And, while they didn't ask me for a down payment, I wouldn't be surprised that some dealers may ask for a down payment in those circumstances - they have to spend time and money to secure a vehicle, and take on the risk of a customer walking, leaving them with a vehicle they don't have a buyer for.

You can say all you want, but based on the outcome, it looks like I was correct. The simplest solution is often times the truth. I prefer to go through life with a positive outlook. Immediately assuming that everyone else is an ******* that is trying to take advantage of you seems like a sad and selfish way to live. Accidents happen, and most companies and people will try to make it right. Be kind to others, and maybe you won't be treated like an *******, because that's how you look to them. ;)

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go plant a tree so I can hug it in about 20 years.
Dealers are *******s and DO try to take advantage of people.... if your dealer was nice to you and your experience was pleasant that just means you didn't put up a fight when he was sticking it in you

You've gotten some great advice here so far regarding your situation.

Only thing I'd add is that if their reply of "....for just $200.00 more for a 2015..." was their first offer to "make it right", I'd squeeze them. There's probably more deal to be had there, but the only way you'll find out is if you go after it. Dramatize the fact that they wasted your time, and that all your forum buddies are cautioning you that "something's up" about buying from this particular dealer :-) You might be surprised at how far they'll go. It's just negotiation 101.....the first offer is rarely the last/best. You just have to work a bit for it.

In general, you are probably right. However, he's already at a price of $34,6xx for the 2015 SR5 Premium 4X4 with 3rd row. The '15 MSRP, including the Anniversary discount, is above $38K. Sometimes you just have to recognize the fact that you got lucky, and say yes.

(And, yes, the dealer will still make a profit. And so will Toyota. How else am I going to get one of those 6th gen T4R's?)

My 4Runner was the second car I've bought from the dealer in a 2 month window. We bought my wife a Corolla in Dec, then I bought my 4Runner in late Jan. We paid cash for both so it was a very simple negotiation. They didn't try to jerk me around, and I didn't try to jerk them around. It was a fair deal, they made a bit of money, and I saved a bit of money.

When I was in the market for my 4Runner, I knew exactly what I wanted. They found one at another dealer and were able to trade for it that day. They put in the effort to track down exactly what I wanted, and I was grateful for that.

I'm sure I could have paid a few hundred less, but that's nothing in the long run. If I went in there with the mindset that they were there to take advantage of me, then proceed to treat them like crap, I'm sure they would have taken a few hundred off the price to get me to go away, but that's not how I work.

cool story bro! I am not in the business of giving my money away to be a nice guy.... to each his own I guess

I want your job. Got any extra laying around? I'd like a new rig... :wof:

You don't have to treat people like crap to get a good deal. It is possible to rob someone blind and have them thank you as you walk out the door... haha

Which dealer?

I'm looking to get into a '14 but want to avoid this dealer. I see you are in Chicago, which dealer is it?

I don't know what the MSRP difference is between the Limited and the Trail, but I just bought mine a few weeks ago. I got mine for thousands less than he's paying. His is (going to be) a 2015, and it's a limited, so maybe that's appropriate....I honestly don't know. What I think though is that he may be leaving money on the table. Might even be quite a bit. I think it's common knowledge that MSRP doesn't mean much in car deals.

My point is that negotiation is a skill....not luck. I did my whole deal via email. I had done my homework, and I knew how much I was willing to pay before ever contacting the dealer. Even after the dealer hit my required number....I kept going until I knew they were at the bottom of their offer (which frankly surprised me). I was never disrespectful or mean. Everything was "business" all the way. They are in the business of getting as much as possible from me, and I'm the business of getting as much off as I can. When we were done with the deal, we shook hands and both had a smile.

In the OP's case, the dealer made a mistake, and admitted it. I would leverage that position in a BUSINESS negotiation and drive the price down as far as I could.

I look at it this way, Any amount I save is money in my family's pocket. I'd rather spend those thousands on my family than give them to a dealer who probably won't even remember my name in 6 months. Stopping the negotiating process before the dealer hits that "take it or leave it" point is just giving money away IMO. I'm actually glad that there are so many out there who don't mind leaving money on the table. makes it easier for me to negotiate when the dealer knows they'll be making up those margins on so many others :-)

Of course MSRP is not the real benchmark. But he was already $3,500+ below that. And just to be clear, we should also talk about all those other factors that one should consider when buying a car. An evil dealer can compensate for your low price with any of these:

*Financing? Loan origination fees, interest rates, and length of loan. (If I had to finance, it would not be through a dealer.)

*New car vs. demo? What is worth to have the #$%&*’s test drive your “new car” for a few hundred or a few thousand miles before you take delivery?

*Trade in value of your old vehicle? (Personally, I've always sold my own used cars.)

*The ambush at closing: The last-minute extended warranty, the extra paint protection, or the 200 pounds of goo they want to add to your undercarriage (do they still try that one?).

*Is it exactly the car you wanted, or the one they just happened to have available?

*And finally, if the sales agent / manager made any promises (“Oh sure, we can add/delete that, no problem”), have they been kept? Kept before the closing occurs?

Wow 34,600! I just orbered a 15 sr5 prem w/3rd row and MSRP is 39,190.00!That price is back of hold back! I'd let my dealer sell or trade or just f up a few times if I could get that price!!!

Sup guys,

Just got confirmation that my T4R will be in by next Thursday and $34,500 before TTL. This whole thing has been a new experience for me as the dealer I've gone to has always had the car I wanted which makes for easy negotiations. I normally always purchase on the last day of the month as well and seem to get lucky that the weather is bad.

It will be interesting to see what happens when I show up with a check from my bank and they can't slide in any fees from financing. I'll disclose the dealership information after I take delivery. An acquaintance that works for another dealer in Illinois advised me that this price is definitely a price they are honoring only because of their screw up and the fact that I had a deposit in on the vehicle. Now I need to find some stuff to driver over!

Just curious.... Are you trading something in or just buying the new T4R outright? Also, are you getting a 4x4 or a 4x2?

what $34.5? SR5 Premiums with 3rd row go for <$34k all day long around here so while the price is good, they aren't doing anything special for you. Hope it all works out
