Hi, I'm new to the forum, and I'm looking for my first T4R. I found one I want that was taken in trade by another brand dealer. The truck is in fantastic shape, clean, perfect body, and low miles. I know the X-REAS system has been discussed a million times before, but I thought this story was worth telling...
When I test drove it Saturday, it was great, except there was a grinding noise when you turn the wheel to full lock, and it was super bouncy. So I arranged to come back down today to take it in to a nearby Toyota dealer for a checkup. It's a pain, since it's a1.5 hr drive each way and $15 in tolls round trip, but better safe than sorry.
So anyway, the Toyota shop confirms the car is perfect, except the X-REAS has been opened, tapered with, somehow damaged. They quote $1500 in parts and 12 hours of labor to fix it.
I think great, I'll get a good deal and an excuse to upgrade the suspension right away.... When I got back to the dealer I gave them the Toyota dealers quote and everything.
Nope. The dealer won't sell me the car in that condition at all. They said they would look into if they can fix it cheaper, and if they can, they would still consider selling it. But if it's going to cost 3k to fix it, they will need to cut their losses and sell it wholesale for auction.
When I asked if I could just buy it in this condition they said they would need tip ask their lawyer, but doubted it.
So now I'm pissed I even brought it in. I wouldn't have had much to bargain with, but maybe I could have gotten the price down a little and just gone and fixed the shocks myself.
My wife was wondering if the dealers techs might have disconnected the X-REAS accidentally when giving the truck an alignment. That's doesn't seem likely, but I checked the service records the truck, and it's had no major work done it all.
I know their service manager is reading forums to learn about this problem, so he might see this post, but I think that's fine.
It's a good truck other than this problem. I think it's crazy this system has no way to be topped off and re-bled like a brake system. :ybrick:
