Dealership wants $4,000 for wiring harness

'04 4 runner LTD. radio stays on & multi info panel stays illuminated when key is out and ignition is off (Stays powered all of the time)

Toyota dealership found bad wire harness: wants $800.00 for harness, 20 hours for labor. Bill will be $4,000!!!!! SERIOUSLY?????? But, I don't want my battery to drain...

Help, I'm in a quandary!!!!!!!!

Seems like a go away proposal. Have you tried swapping the ignition switch to see if it is just a bad switch?

Also, if it isn't turning off, I would look at the harness between the dash and fuse box. Testing for a short from the ignition harness should be easy to test. Pull the connector on one end and fuses on the other.

Basically you have a short somewhere, but dealers are in the part replacement business so their answer is to replace all the wires. You can trace the short yourself with a little research and a lot of persistence. Just pull the radio fuse until you find the short.

Taking a dash in and out is a ***** man, there are a ton of wires intertwined, and lots of plugs. its not just a simple harness to replace. I don't blame them for the 20 hours of labor all though it sounds a little high. 14-15 hours is more reasonable.

That's a good place to start, $4k isn't entirely unreasonable in terms of parts and labor.

Replacing a wiring harness in a modern vehicle is not an easy task depending on the harness in question.

Could use more information on what's going on and what they determined.

Duke: Whew! THanks. I took your advice and spent about $100 on cut-off switch with labor. Funny thing is, the original problem never duplicated itself.

I know you got to your solution already but there is another thought...

If you tracked down know and which is the problem circuit or item, then perhaps install a relay on the 12v supply side on that circuit and wire that to the ACC/On position...

That way when you key off, it cuts power, and when you key on it turns on.

At least that way its automatic and one less thing you have to diddle with every time you get in/out of the truck.
