Dealership woes

Looking for a bit of advice.... so heres some back story.

The wife and I bought our 07 Limited only a few months ago (And we love it). When we bought it from a local Toyota dealership we did everything through Toyota, financing ect. We bought the extended warranty, maintenance plan, gap insurance, the whole nine. It had 116ish on it when we bought it and the water pump had not been changed yet. It was the only thing that hadn't been done. The finance manager who worked with us explained that it would be covered in the maintenance plan because it was routine to change it. He also mentioned oil changes, tire rotation, ect. So about a month ago we took it in to schedule an oil change and to schedule to have the water pump changed. The maintenance dept said it wasn't covered that the only thing that was covered was oil changes. We walked over to the finance managers office to voice our concerns. He explained again that he was under the impression it was covered. Two weeks later, several phone calls and emails, they say it is not covered that the plan does in fact only cover oil changes. The wife and I discussed it and told them to cancel the plan because it wasn't worth the money to us. Now since then we have been in discussion about changing the water pump. They say if it fails it would be covered under the warranty. I explained that from the warranty point of view that they might say that it is not covered because it has out preformed its expected 90,000 miles when it was due to be changed. I explained that had we known it wasn't covered that we would have negotiated the price we paid to reflect us paying out of pocket or have insured it was changed prior to us buying it.

SO on to today. We were waiting for a reply from the finance managers boss on what would be a possible course of action. They said they would change it free of charge, BUT we had to keep the maintenance plan they said they already canceled. My wife emailed back clarifying that we could either keep the plan and they pay for it or we cancel everything and we pay for it, either way is roughly the same price paid by us in the end. We received a very angry email back from the finance manager explaining that in his 7 years of selling Toyota's he has never had an issue like this. And that they would cancel the plan and have the water pump changed. "I have never ran into a situation like this in the 7 plus years I have worked for Toyota. I myself am done with dealing with this so in order for me to put an end to it I will pay for it." Almost exactly 10 min later we received another email to apologize for the tone in the previous email. I contacted Toyota corporate customer service and should be hearing something back by Monday.

I've had some bad experiences with other dealerships in the past but have had nothing but excellent service at other Toyota dealerships. So the question is are we crazy for being just a little bit upset and feeling like we were lied to, or at least misinformed in the first place? Likewise should we have gone through so many hoops just to be back where we were in the first place?

During the whole process I had a different Toyota dealership change the oil and asked them to do a check on everything to see if anything possibly was needing service. The service manager personally walked me into the bay and walked me under the lift to show me that they could not find a single thing that would need serviced in the near future. He specifically pointed out the water pump and the 4wd and to cycle the 4wd to make sure everything gets some use. (already knew that) So I know have have the reassurance that we made a great purchase, its just the principle to me at this point.

The prepaid maintenance plans are a total scam... stay away from them. The warranty may or may not cover a failed water pump depending on who the warranty is through. Some consider it a maintenance item, others cover it under powertrain. Either way, the b.s. the finance guy told you to get you to buy the maint. plan would be enough to have me raising hell to have that money refunded and I would absolutely get them to cover the cost of the repair itself because as you said, it would have been a negotiating point for the price of the truck etc. As far as his attitude, who cares. Let him act like a baby. Get your money back, your water pump replaced, and never go back.

X2.....Finance is the last person to scam you after the salesperson/manager period. I walk in their and say no to everything and tell em' just print the papers. LOL

You bought gap insurance. Ouch, they scammed you. Gap insurance is to cover the difference of depreciation and loan amount. On new cats, this is a big enough deal 20-30% to warrant it.

On 7 year old car, where depreciation is very flat, why anyone would scam a poor couple is being me. Unless you had a horrid deal where you b agreed to pay significantly over book value,_you almost never need gap insurance on a used car.

They appear to have assumed you b were an easy mark and scammed you. What really confuses me is, why didn't you ask for anything in writing? Any type of extended warranty should come with a detailed explanation of what it does, and does not cover.

I won't defend them, but it appears you helped in this by making yourself an easy target. Hopefully you have learned a lesson or two.

Also_FYI_ the 4runner is literally the easiest vehicle to change the oil. Take about 10 min tops. Just do it yourself.

I have not seen a service interval specified from Toyota for the water pump in any of their literature as far as I know. I do recommend to customers to have their water pump replaced as a preventative measure on the 2UZ-FE (4.7L V8) engines because the work involved on replacing the water pump is also replacing the timing belt (which will typically get recommended if coolant is found to have dripped on the belt.) So from a labor standpoint its more beneficial to replace that part preventatively while you're doing the timing belt (its literally just 5-10 minutes more work if you're already doing the timing belt.) Where as the 1GR-FE (4.0L V6) water pump is easy to get at and replace, so I would only recommend replacement if you have a failure. The water pump is covered by Toyota Extra Care (Toyota's Extended Warranty) under powertrain and you should have little to no issue claiming it if it fails under your policy term.

The issue here is that the sales department made a verbal contract with you that was not recorded on paper (I'm assuming they didn't otherwise they would legally be forced to honor the contract and this would be very cut and dry.) Unfortunately this happens a lot and our service department spends a lot of times getting the brunt of an angry customer's realization they've been had due to our incompetent sales department (literally they will sell the vehicle the day before and then come in and find out they've been promised something that we can't uphold and it becomes a big stink.)

I hope you guys find a solution that works out for you and your wife, but if anything the water pump is covered under your Toyota Extra Care policy (it'll be detailed in the little pamphlet that they either printed out for you or you will receive in the mail); we actually do a couple water pumps a month under Toyota Extra Care.

well sounds like you got taken.

report the incident to toyota and vote with your feet.

you could also post in the dealer section of this forum warning others about that dealership...

I never buy warranties or maintenance coverage. They never seem to be "valid" when i need them...

report the incident to toyota and vote with your feet.

Reporting to Toyota won't do any good. Voting with your feet and telling everyone your experience is the only weapon you have.

This Gap insurance, and extended warranty and Customer Service plans are all created by the manufacturers..and IMHO are totally worthless. Their only point is to generate more profit for the manufacturers and their dealers. I've never bought them..never will. I'm sure we'll get the FEW people who have actually benefited from them...but the VAST VAST majority LOST money.

I couldn't believe the load of crap the gal in the Toyota finance department tried to upsell me on when I purchased my 07' 4Runner last year. Everything from a windshield warranty, carpet stain warranty, leather seat warranty....yada yada.

I told the gal, "the whole premise behind me purchasing a Toyota is reliability. If I truly need to purchase an extended warranty package, then what you're telling me is Toyota really doesn't manufacture a quality product".

That shut her up......

So a bit of an update:

After emailing the dealership manager and the owner everyone is backpedaling. Both the owner and manager have sent lengthy apology emails and the finance director has also been in contact with us. The dealership is going to cover the charge to have the water pump changed and cancel the maintenance plan. We are working with them to schedule a time to come in and meet in person this weekend.

Glad they are "making it right" by you, but I knew you were in trouble in the first few sentences. You took mechanical advice from a finance manager. We live, we learn.

Went through the same thing when we bought our new Prius in 2010. Finance guy tried to sell us on a TON of extra stuff "Because it can all be financed at the 0%!" :AK47: He was incredulous, to the point of sounding angry about it, when I refused everything.

I gave him, almost word for word, your response about the $2000 Extended Warranty he was desperate to sell me.

OP, glad they are making it right. :bluejump:
