Even Steven said:Yes, I think you're correct about the status symbol thing. I can afford $5/gal gas (or higher) and still drive my gas hog SUV. Especially so with those BMW and Land Rover SUV owners, LOL.
Personally, I like the idea of fewer SUVs on the roads because I'll get a clearer view in traffic when I'm in mine!
JP4RNR said:You probably won't see as many 4Runners being utilized as grocery getters. There are a lot of soccer mom's driving 4Runners when really a highlander would be more appropriate.
While a highlander is classified as an SUV, it's small enough and gets good mileage and probably won't suffer to much as sales go.
Does the highlander still have a 4Cyl option?

Here in socal I have begun to notice a certain segment of the population who give you a dirty look at the gas pumps if you have an SUV. Almost as if they are blaming us for causing global warming or using more gas than their car.seh750 said:I wonder if SUVs will become a bigger status symbol in some circles...look at me, I can afford $5 gas in my 10MPG Hummer...or something like that.
I ran a vehicle cost comparison report of my collection which includes an aging, but reliable, sports car and several motorcycles. Due to the longevity of the tires and the absolutely minimal maintenance requirements, the 4Runner is STILL the least expensive vehicle to drive in my fleet (although it's quickly losing that distinction).

Even Steven said:My neighbor to my left drives a Hummer H2 for his daily driver. He lives 3 miles from his job. I have another neighbor across the street who drives a Civic and lives 45 miles from his job.
So who uses more gas to get to and from work?
RonMAIDEN said:Per mile driven the Hummer is still using more gas (I'm sure he still puts the miles on it driving anywhere else) for even that little of a commute but I'm the short commute group too since I only do 8 miles each way and can afford to keep my nearly paid off 4Runner even if gas goes over $5.
simple said:Are we seriously arguing that the civic uses more gas because of the specific situation of your neighbors?
Your neighbors are 2 of 300 Million Americans, and I have serious doubts that they are the only Hummer and Civic owners in the continental United States.
RonMAIDEN said:Do you really think that Hummer is just being driven 30 miles a week plus once gas prices really get high the Civic might be worth more money than the Hummer which are losing their resale value by the day.
Plus that's just one rare case since I know alot of people around here that are suffering using an H2 or even an H3 as their main vehicle.
