Deck plate...why only 3.4??

Are deck plate mods popular with other vehicles/motors or is there something that makes it work better on the 3.4? When I search "deck plate mod", I'm only seeing Yota chatter. Just curious.

I believe it's the size and shape of the 2.7 L engine that prevents a deck plate mod from being used on it.
 
The deckplate mod is popular with many makes and models. If you can find one that fits your airbox there is no reason you can't do it. The idea behind where the deck plate goes on the 3.4 air box is that since it's behind the headlight/grill area that cooler air makes it's way into there rather than purely heat soaked air, so keep that in mind when thinking about where to put yours (I'm not sure where exactly the air box is on the 4cyl).

The air box is in the same place

The problem is, there is no flat surface on the 2.7 air box.

Do you mean there is more Toyota chatter on deck plate modding than any other type of vehicle maker like Jeep, Dodge, etc?
Or just the relation between 3.4 and 2.7 and such?
Im interested as well.
 
i thought it was discovered that this is a completely useless "mod"

it f-s up the A/f ratio from what i remember reading, or maybe i was dreaming?

It won't mess up your AFR, but it is useless. I hate the sound it creates, your stock intake elbow will pull in cooler air.
 
yep. i got sick of the sound, and the logic of cooler air from the elbow makes way too much sense. . . i corrected my hole with the deckplate replacement mod.

Exactly. If you search "deck plate mod", the results show nothing but Toyota chatter.
 
I'm pretty sure it was a Tacoma guy that came up with the concept of putting a deck plate on the airbox of his truck to increase power, and it worked. I'm very sure it could be used on many other vehicles but I guess it never really caught on or it might be that it isn't as effective on other vehicles. Who knows.
 
Regardless of what people say, in my experience, the deckplate does throw a code. I had it happen on 2 different 4Runners. Plugged the deckplate, reset the system, and the code never came back.

I drank the coolaid. But I also have a numbers/analytical mind. I had three tanks of numbers before I cut my air box. I can tell you with all honesty that the only thing it did for me was to increase engine bay noise and decrease the milage... by 3 mpg! And I had done new plugs and the Sea Foam cleanout for oil (BTW holy crap the SF it works. I had just put brand new oil in it. after 200 miles, I drained it. It was black as midnight. The engine is definitely happier).

I sealed it right back up and this tank is already showing improved gas milage. I never saw any increase in power/pickup, or acceleration. Besides, there is a nice little button I call "lets waste gas-a go-go". It does help with acceleration, but this is done thru the computer to change air-fuel ratio's, and shift points I assume. (the best part is its wasting gas on demand only)

Just my opinion on the coolaid, and some first hand numbers to work off of.
