Deck plates and ISR mod

So no need to explain to me what they are. I just want to know if any one has any proof(like a dyno test) that they actually work.
Also since many of the forums ive read say the deck plate mod is controversial because the stock intake location supposedly can support the needed intake flow. Can some one shine some light on these subjects :)

I don't have dyno test results but noticed no significant gains after my deck plate mod. I did the mod with hopes of better fuel economy. I've read the ISR in combination with the deck plate yield more significant results but I wouldn't go out of my way for these mods.
 
I've read that quite a lot, ive done the ISR mod and the only thing I saw that had a slight improvement was throttle response. The deck plate mod didnt really look that benifical to me because I live near and drive on a beach daily and I wouldn't want any sand particals to end up in my engine.

I've forgotten a few times that my airbox is wide open in conditions where it shouldn't be. Now I usually just keep it closed up like it was before.
 
I can only go by my own experience.

About the only thing done (and I have tried about everything) to my 4Runner to help improve my gas mileage was the combination of what amounts to an ISR mod (Airaid Jr. Intake) plus changing my muffler from stock to a Borla.
The Airiad Jr also includes a better air filter than what I had.

Throttle response is definitely better, it sure seems to have a tiny bit more get up and go when hitting the highway.
and I do get about 1-2mpg better gas mileage on the highway, though only about .5 to maybe 1mpg better around town. This is much better than the absolute zero improvement I had seen with everything else I tried.

You know how when you get used to a vehicle, once you have put lots of miles behind the wheel of any vehicle that you can feel/hear almost sense when something is not quite right.
Well once I changed the Intake and Filter (IN) and then changed the Muffler (out) it just plain old feels better to me.
So to me at least it was worth every penny.

But I have to say, you don't get the overall feeling of improvement until you do both the IN and the OUT.
So if you are going to do a Deckplate Mod and ISR , if you still run a stock muffler you will see a lot less of an improvement.

I think these are incremental mods where doing each one helps just a tiny bit, but adding all those tiny bits up is a decent improvement.

I agree entirely, I just got a flowmaster super 44 and noticed my mileage a tad better. Except for the first tank when I drove agressviely to hear the sound of it. :brick:

The key thing here is that his tests were done on a supercharged 3.4L, which flows more air than a normally aspirated 3.4. A normally aspirated 3.4 will get all the air it needs through a stock airbox so any gains seen will probably be statistical anomalies (or 'I can feel the difference' like when adding the 'Tornado' intake swirler gimmick). Provided an air filter/intake is adequate by design for an engine, the engine can only USE as much air as it can flow (determined by factors in the engine, not the air intake). Putting a 1000 cfm air intake system on an engine that only flows/needs 500 cfm won't make more power, and will probably reduce torque at some RPMs.

And as I have pointed out on previous threads, the deck plate mod or other intake mods that don't isolate the engine bay heat from the air intake will most likely reduce horsepower rather than gain power (hot air is less dense and makes less power - the factory air box is a 'cold air intake' since it takes outside cold air from the fender well). In the test in the link, the opened up air box did show some gains, but dyno runs are done (almost always) with the hood open, so engine heat can escape. Driving in the summer time, with 150 deg heat coming off the radiator right into the air intake, it probably won't make those numbers.

The best air intake is one that flows enough air to meet the needs of the engine (which the factory system does) and provides the best filtering. I'd rather not have dust ruining my engine to gain a little noise or even some 'real' power gains.

Exhaust mods will gain more power and mileage than intake mods.
 
That makes sense now because from what I've read deck plate mods don't really do all to much, Hince why I didnt do it. I don't see a reason to cut a hole in a perfectly good air box that has a good stock intake location to take air from inside the engine bay.

Id say you'll get more noticeable gains if you go with the exhaust route first. Here's why: Exhaust literally flows like water. Not only that, but a very good analogy about automotive exhaust is that it flows like traffic on the freeway. For the sake of "keep it simple" I'll use the freeway analogy in this article.

Picture 3 very busy on ramps in Los Angeles, or Atlanta rush hour traffic. These 3 on ramps are only 20' apart from each other and have only a 100' runway before they force themselves through all 3 lanes of traffic and merge you right into the fast lane at a 90* angle. That is your stock exhaust manifold.

From there you travel 1/4 mile or so and you reach an area of the freeway that not only has painted lanes to separate traffic, but lining the lanes there are steel poles. Not only are there poles lining the lanes but the poles cause the lane to become so narrow that there is only a foot of clearance on either side of the vehicle. This is your first catalytic converter. Then you travel the length of a football field and come to another field of narrow lanes lined by steel poles, that's your second catalytic converter.

Now, it's smooth sailing for another quarter mile and you merge with an entirely new 3 lane freeway that just went through what you went through, all 6 lanes have to merge back into a 3 lane highway, this is the y pipe.

Continue on for another 1/4 mile and there is a huge brick wall right in the middle of the freeway!!! This brick wall blocks all 3 lanes! With no signs saying which way to go to get around it. Some traffic is going right, some left. But ether way you go the only option is get right up to the wall, stop, then go around using the left or right shoulder of the freeway. Now go around 2 more brick walls right in the way of the lanes!! This would best describe your muffler.

Continue down some sweeping long curves with very little obstruction and exit the freeway into oblivion, this would be your tailpipe.

What does all of this tell you? What part of this freeway would you fix first? Obviously the brick walls in the middle of the freeway are causing the most back up in the entire system. For goodness sake, you have to completely stop and in no certain order go around the walls before you can continue on to the long sweeping curve that is the tailpipe.

I have not done the ISR mod, but after doing the deckplate, TB-O ring gasket, a drop in K&N, and the Type "R" breather plug I noticed really improved throttle response and a solid pull from a dead stop to speed. Where before it sorta lagged when shifting and lost that pulling feeling by 3rd gear. My roommate also noticed these improvements just from riding with me all the time. She and I both dig the sound the open deckplate makes, whenever I stomp the gas I get a smile and yell "BREATHE" lol. Yes the factory airbox will keep up with the demand but there is a 90° bend right before the box inside the fender, and that tube runs back too the passenger door to help keep water out of the intake. Not a bad idea but it restricts flow a little. Much rather have the opening facing forward off the airbox right behind the headlights, but thats me.

The last two sentences here sum up what all these "intake" manufacturers are living on. Confusion. You state the factory airbox will keep up with demand. That ought to be the end of it. Saying it restricts flow a little negates the first statement.

If you read the post by [MENTION=102083]FROGrunner[/MENTION], it is a pretty good analogy. He may have gone overboard with the brickwall LOL, but his points are valid. The real "restriction" is in the exhaust. I will go a step farther and say that MOST of these mods are a waste of time and money because they must be done in combination. More air means NOTHING without more fuel! More air & fuel mean nothing if you can't move it through the combustion process, and all camshaft timing, valve size and 3 angles valve jobs won't overcome a restrictive exhaust.

That is not to say some manufacturers haven't screwed up one or more of these factors in the name of space/sound/cost/emmissions, etc. We as enthusiasts simply do not have the resources to "know" from vehicle to vehicle what the best solutions(mods) are. Trial and error is our only hope, and the division of labor provided by this forum is just awesome.

So get a good muffler, keep your intake COLD, and drink good Whiskey!

I did read it so why re-state it to me. I think you need to go back and read the posts, OP already stated they upgraded the muffler (witch FROGrunner suggested to start with). I am just trying to stay on topic and answer the OP's questions about INTAKE MODS! I also fail to see why you don't think a intake can be restricted but still keep up with the demand. We are not running SC's here. You can think or say what you want about the mods but I know they have helped.

While I do not think the deckplate mod really does too much of anything except maybe under rare situations, I DO however believe getting rid of the Intake Silencer via changing the intake to an Airaid Jr kit or whatever DIY mod does in fact make a bit of difference.
If it didn't then every single person that has done it wouldn't all claim they have "better throttle response".
The silencer was not put in there for better performance of any kind it is there solely to do what its name implies, quiet down the engine noise and nothing else.
Take it out and you get better flow going IN, better throttle response.

Same with the Stock Muffler, it was not meant for anything but lowest noise possible while still letting the engine breathe enough to run.

Put in a much freer flowing muffler and your whole system is breathing better IN and OUT.
You WILL get better throttle response, noticeably so.
You SHOULD get a bit better gas mileage especially on the highway which means something is certainly happening to the engine for the better.

You MIGHT get a very slight improvement in HP

I only stated the muffler because our dyno results showed that my BAMuffler produced the most amount of power throughout the band vs flowmaster/magnaflow. We gained power moving from the flowmaster to the BAMuffler and I have the same mods as the OP I.e ISR, TB gasket"o" and high flow filter. No deck plate.

Jay, sorry if it sounded like I was attacking your post, I was attacking the industry more than anything. For the record ALL intakes are restrictive to some degree, my point was that if it keeps up with demand, it isn't enough of a restriction to worry about. As for what I think about the mods, well I'll stand by what I said. If it flows enough, it flows enough. Whatever amount of air you put in to an engine has to get out, that is all I was saying.
Again, I wasn't trying to flame, I promise to check my negative enthusiasm in the future.
