DeckPlate MOD in CA

I have had this on my 3rd gen for 5 years. My wife went to get it smogged (she went w/o telling me) and the charged her $60 and even though it passed they said the PCV was "tampered with" and rejected it. A

Anyone have any ideas?????? Or maybe I have to buy the stock parts just to get it approved?

PCV was tampered with?

What does a deckplate have to do with your PCV? Sounds like you happened to get stuck with a real dipshit to smog your truck, I'd suggest finding someone else.

That is what I was saying. I will try another SMOG place. I am in RSM and I think there is one in Lake Forest that will work. Thanks
 
Where I live they stopped smog tests but when they did them, I had a fully modified Turbo talon, hard pipe intake, no cat, no smog, everything removed. I would have to keep the car revved up to keep her hot, they would even let me keep it revved up in the dock till it was time to start the test. Then we started all running e85 and e85 will never fail emissions. Actually some folks would fill up e85 just for emissions here.
 
Smog shops are the most non-creative thinkers I have ever encountered. I had to go to 3 different smog shops before I found one that didnt start off the conversation by saying that it wouldn't pass because it had a CARB legal K&N intake on it.(that doesnt make sense) Take it some where else. I asked my mechanic if he had anyone he could recommend. Passed with flying colors. They get scarred of the visual I guess...
 
It is just the shop man. CA is retarded about some thing. There is something in the SMOG laws that states that if there are any changes to the car it cant pass in CA. They hassled me with my 95 Suburban when I had it about at flowmaster on it. It still passed with no issue at all but the "Inspection" was not compliant to CA specs. I hate this sate for so many reasons, this being one of them, Taxes,Gun Laws, and I can go on...

You now what I say, F&ck CARB (California Air Resource Board) . They ruin everything.
I have had many cars over the years that will pass a sniffer test, but not visual.
 
If its the deck plate couldnt you just screw the piece in first b4 you go? Or would they fail that too?
 
I just installed an AirAid hope they dont give me any sh**t about it when smog time comes around...
I heard certain counties (Santa Cruz?) dont have smog/ have more lenient rules.
Maybe you could go to a county with more relaxed rules?

Well AirAid is just the brand, but its an intake tube that replaces the stock intake.
If you search ISR mod its essentially the same thing, the idea being that the engine might breath slightly better and get .1mpg more lol
Basically it just makes the intake louder...
But others on the site have reported "better throttle response" And amazing HP increases similar to those of the TRD badge and sticker mods
I have yet to experience these gains I have only driven a couple miles with it so far.

I just screwed in my deckplate and my smog shop didnt say anything to me at all and it passed no problem.
 
I'm inclined to believe the cover was unscrewed and the smog tech saw a huge hole in the airbox. The OP never clarified if the cover was on or not.

I failed the visual inspection for the air raid. The place I took it to gave one free retest for failing. The guy said I needed a sticker from air raid saying it was california legal or the original tube, or for 30 bucks he would look the other way. So I went home put the original back on and took it back and he passed me. As for the deck plate, I had already screwed that back in place initially so he didn't even notice that.
 
I think the REAL problem was that your wife took your truck.
The mechanic saw a woman, and used that to his advantage. I hate that BS.

OR, I agree with [MENTION=68460]Dezert4Runner[/MENTION]. OP, was the cover on your PCV valve when the truck was brought to the inspector? That would be one of the only ways I could see someone say that the PCV was "tampered" with.

I put my deckplate in each time before I smog. CA smog techs have heavy penalties for letting things slide through, so they check anything that looks tampered with. A few months ago I had a smog guy say he wouldn't touch my truck because of the supercharger, even though it's a legit installation with the sticker under the hood and all the paperwork to prove it. I went across the street to have it smogged and had no issues whatsoever, it just depends on who you get as your tech.
