Deckplate Mod...Mod?

Warning: This may be a stupid thought...

I have read about electric fans for the engine coolant.
I have read about the Deckplate Mod for providing more air in the intake
I have read about Ram air ideas utilizing the hood scoop or other means.
I have read that the Deckplate Mod only helps at higher speeds...is that because it forces air into the opening?

Assuming you could figure out the dirt/water intrusion issue while offroading, would there be any benefit to an electric fan at the deckplate opening to pressurize the air box? Would this act like Ram air, by pushing air into the intake? Would this help at low speeds when there is little air movement to push in more air into the intake?

Anyone care to build on this thought, or just crush it with intelligence far superior to mine?

true. if anything, the engine would probably drive the fan faster than the fan itself with the vacuum it creates.
 
just carry it out a bit more

the ram air type effect to the airbox could be done with the small piece of trim removed below the headlight-that would be the passenger side headlight on our 3rd gens.

i have seen pictures of rigs modified that way-with custom intakes below each headlight. I will try to locate the link-but it only shows the pictures- the link to the text is dead.

which is exactly why these electric superchargers you see on ebay are a sham, all they are is an electric fan
 
Also, the deckplate mod doesn't work the best at high speeds. It's just that it helps pull in a little more air at higher RPM's. But the lower RPM power suffers a little bit. I know people have done it and like it, but for me, it's not worth the hassle for a 1HP gain, if that.

BTW, the ram air thing with the scoop does nothing. If it did, don't you think the highly paid engineers at Toyota would've thought to leave it open? :p If you open it up, all it does is get your engine dirtier.
 
why take a shower then put back on the dirty clothes?

i mean, why only do the deckplate or put a CAI on your rig, or ram air? you are only half way there, you need to thinking about that air exiting the engine, (ex. oversized valves, new muffler w/ exhaust, cat delete.) on engines the exhaust valves are smaller than the intake, so it only seems fair to upgrade the exhaust 1st!


do you guys see what i am talking about?

Yes, you do need to upgrade the other components as well, as only doing one or two will create a bottle-neck.

BUT on our 3.4L truck engines, there is no point in doing any bolt-on mods. Doing all of that and spending lots of cash will only yield a few HP. These engines aren't like an LS1 where simple bolt-on's make a noticeable difference. The only way to go, IMO, is forced induction.
 
and larger valves, maybe light weight pistons,


but my boss put a blower on his harley chopper, and drove it, then thought he is increasing flow, but not letting it escape, then he did a head job only to the exhaust valves and that bike could keep up with street bike! it was that fast off the line, but after 120mph the harley became unsafe because it was never meant to go that fast as the streamline crotch rockets are..
 
The main reason I have done no exhaust work is that it costs alot of money... so it is harder for me to justify the purchase when I have to pay bills and only make about $1000 a month where I work right now. Not to mention tuition...

I was lucky enough to get all the intake stuff taken care of before I even left for college, but it was cheap regardless.

Well, modifying the internals of the engine are a little overkill, not to mention incredibly expensive. The valve size is fine. The valves are small, but when you have 12 exhaust valves, they can pull just as much volume as a 2" pipe. You act as if they are a bottleneck. The only time that would become a factor is if you were in excess of say.....600hp. These engines are much different than a V twin harley motor. Many people are making gobs of HP with these engines with stock internals. CAI intakes are known to increase airflow into the engine, since the restrictive airbox is eliminated. BUT, most times poorly designed CAI intakes increase air intake temps, due to being in the engine bay. The key is to make sure that you are getting the coldest air possible. When air is colder, it is denser, which allows more air into the engine. I agree with you though about the exhaust, most stock exhasusts restrict the airflow, the faster the air enters the engine, the faster its gonna get rid of it. With these engines though, even with a free flowing exhaust, and intake, you might see 10hp. the only way to make any respectable power with these engines is to go forced induction. I think you guys should quit spend $100 here, $100 there, and just save your $$ and get a supercharger if you want to increase your HP.
