Deckplate Mod Poll

decided to make this poll to see what deckplate size you guys have

also plz add the reasoning of why you chose the size you got thx

basically... it was the end of the summer (end of boating season) and the boat store only had 5" in stock, I knew it would fit so I went with it. I just didn't have the patience to wait for a 4". It works, but I believe 5" is as big as you can go.

4'' is perfect for n/a motors and 6'' is great for s/c motors

Speaking of the deckplate mod... Does anyone ever put the plate back in? I don't off road much but I read that the hole should be covered during heavy rain. I haven't put it back on as of yet and haven't had any problems.

been raining here for almost 3weeks and well they forgot to put up the high water sighs and well i came around the corner doin 45 and hit about 4'' of water never got close to the intake so i say its fine unless you plan on crossing 4 feet of water

I lived in Oregon for 10 years (wish I was there instead of Ohio) and 3 weeks of rain would be a short spell this time of year.

I used a 4" deckplate offset to counter the windshield wipe fluid tube. It fit perfectly. It is also easy to have a 4" hole saw on hand then all you need to do is file a bit and you have a snug fit deckplate.

Hole saws are pretty expensive so if anyone needs a 4" one I'll let it go cheap.

cost me 12bucks also its a good idea to use a screen for the deckplate to keep little stuff out of the intake box

I did the old "connect the dots" method (trace out the hole, drill a bunch of holes just inside of the line, connect the holes with a jigsaw, it worked. Then of course there's the filing.

I got a 4". I dont have a screen, but I feel I dont need one thanks to my TrueFlow. Gotten about 1.25-1.75 miles more per gallon with the deckplate/TF mod. I got 4" becuase that is all the marina had...

The screen (I used screendoor material) placed right inside the deckplate will keep large debris and small rodents out of the airbox and away from your Trueflow. Just an extra precaution.

Well, I just finished my 4" deck plate mod, I'm getting my keyboard all dirty with the engine grease....

I had to add an extra step cause the boat shop only had white, so I sprayed the deck plate with primer and then with black.

But no screen for me just yet. I tried and tried but there isn't much deck plate sticking out on the inside to mount the screen material to. And since I was seriously running low on patience I decided to give it a try another day.

I also read somewhere that people reset their computer, or some fuse, after doing this mod, is this necessary?

Yes,just disconnect the battery for ten minutes and then that will allow for the computer to recalibrate itself and the air fuel ratio since it'll be seeing more air.

when i considered doing the deckplate mod i wanted to be able to restore the air box to its original state. I took out the restrictive elbow , so there is just the side whole, and tied the other, trumpeting, section of intake tubing (which is inside the fender) to a bolt hole so it would not rattle. I also took out the intake silencer and replaced it with an aluminum tube. The mods worked great and horsepower greatly increased hp... i did also put a new flowmaster exhaust on at the same time so it was even more dramatic.

Due to lack of availability, I settled for the 6" Deckplate found at the local West Marine. The 6" plate is, I believe the largest that the airbox will accept comfortably. The edges of the deckplate do protrude a bit but yet it still seals properly on the face of the box. The 5" deckplate might fit a bit better (aesthetically). As this is my first mod in the list, I do not have pre-mod fuel consumption numbers but I will compute the fuel effeciency from now on in order to determine if any gains or losses occur.

The engine sound at idle is still not noticeable. Part throttle (0-25%) seems to remain relatively quiet. However, mid to WOT (50-100%) results in a deep, robust engine sound that I thoroughly appreciate. In addition, it "seems" that acceleration is much more responsive. I say "seems" since I cannot back up this claim scientifically. Whether it be a placebo effect due to the sound... well, I don't mind playing the fool at all on this one :biggrin2:

Almost forgot, I will be adding some screen material to the deckplate so as to keep the box free of large debris and/or critters.

This is my first 4Runner... I think I am in love!
