Delorme inReach - GPS Comms

Anyone use one of the Delorme inReach for GPS / 2way texting via Sat comms? Looks like an awesome device. Nice addition to the trail bag?

Yup, I use mine all the time. It works decent.

The pre-set messages you can make and send directly through the device work great, I had a week long backpacking trip in the sierras and summited Whitney last fall and was able to keep in touch with my family the whole time. I keep the device in my truck now as a backup to cell phone in case of emergency while out wheeling, etc. The interface with my Android phone is what bugs me. It always seems to have trouble connecting to the unit via bluetooth or wont send the messages I type in my phone.

Hold your cash for the moment and wait until April for the new InReach SE. It should be a nice upgrade from the current unit.

At my last job I did quite a bit of testing on the inReach, and I was satisfied with the results all-around. Battery life is pretty great for semi-realtime tracking; acquisition time is great; and its connectivity to peripherals was always solid. We in the DC Convoy used them last year while trouncing around the US on the way to/from the FJ Summit, and forum members were able to see where we were at any given time. The only complaint I would have is the lack of an intuitive interface on the backend infrastructure and lack of accessories for the device itself.
