You're not the only one hoping for a v8. I'm hoping for one as well. I would probably keep my 2014 though. I've actually been considering selling my 2008 and going for a GX470 for the v8 and other reasons.

I have a brand new Tundra picked out but I'm also waiting until after the election. I make a damn good living running a clean-coal fired power plant but that would definitely come to an end if a certain candidate (probably the same one you hinted to) were elected. Instead, I would be selling everything and job hunting.
 
What is this magical item you speak of and where do I get it???

I've just moved from a Raptor to a 4Runner for many reasons but a little more power would be great!

I've not been the happiest with the new 4.0 roller rocker engine that the 2010-2017 4runner has along with the 2010-2014 FJ has. IMO the older 4.0 engine is much more torque and a much lower RPM. We won't even talk about the lack of the 4.7 or 4.v8 as an option.

I didn't think the engine could get much worse from Toyota till we got out 2015 Tacoma with the 3.5 engine. It makes driving the 4runner feel like a rocket.

It's rare that a customer turns us on to something but we were doing a mild build on a customers new 2016 4runner recently. I took it for a test drive after the 33's were installed and noticed something different right away.

When talking to the customer I asked him if his was a 2016 when he said yes I said they must have done a engine re-tune. He laughed and said no he just added a Sprint booster.

I was so impressed with the difference of this device that I didn't hesitate to order one online. I don't get anything for saying this, as of now we don't even carry them. I paid the same as any one else would for it. I got it and installed it before a long trip to FJ summit. Even with the 4runner loaded down I could feel a difference. Taking off the 4runner has something it's never had, "POWER". when you push the gas pedal it actually goes and shifts like it should. It sounds throatier too but that could just be due to the higher RPM's it shifts at.

It was hard to tell how much difference it did because I was loaded down for the whole trip and at altitude when I got there and unloaded so the gains weren't as noticeable as when I got home closer to sea level and un-loaded. The 4runner is actually nice to drive now, almost fun! This is the closes it's been to the 2005 4.7 I use to have.

Honestly I've been thinking about selling the 2015 in another year and finding a well equipped 2009 with a v8. The 4th gen IMO is just such a good rounded vehicle. But with this new sprint booster I've been pretty happy with the 2015!

The 2010-2016 4runner bumpers came in yesterday and are heading to powder coating today. We have a few left over for anyone who doesn't have on order yet.

I have mine on Race. Honestly I know it's not a 50hp gain but it feels like it. I think it's more of a it unlocks the power that's already there. It's raspy and responds very well now. I've been enjoying driving this thing again.

Did you ever drive with the transmission in S mode before adding the sprint booster, and how does it compare?

Does the sprint booster do anything other than add blocks under your feet?

Very keen to hear some more details or more pictures. I'm going to add a 3rd row to my inbound TRD Pro. I already bough the OEM seats on eBay. It appears another fellow did this and mentioned some custom brackets. Your write up did not at all. Confused...

I'm particularly interested in:

  • How to cover up exposed metal floor?
  • How is the top of the seat belt mounted (don't guess upper grey interior panels were swapped?
  • Could one swap those panels and the lower "wheel well" panels and get a very factory appearance?

I settled on a trail with the idea of swapping out the rear cargo tray for a 3rd row. I wanted a clean factory look and not the aftermarket look I had used in my 4th gen. I was happy to find out the swap is fairly easy if and this is a big "IF" you have a donor 4runner with the 3rd row.



I'll apologize ahead of time that these pictures aren't as detailed as I'd like if anyone is thinking about doing this swap feel free to contact me for more info. A couple notes, the best way cost wise is to find someone local to you and offer them 500-1000 to swap out the rear cargo for their un-used 3rd row. I did it around Christmas too so that may have helped:) You also have to let the person know that their rear end won't be completely stock looking but for the donor I used he was happy with the results.



I will get some better pics of mine soon but unfortunately I believe I lost the pictures of the donors rear end after the swap.

2015 4runner with tray











You pretty much start by removing all the plastic (refer to manual because I don't remember it all:)









3rd row 4runner









Toyota did something weird on these, the rear seats literally bolt in, the holes and threads are all there. Well except for these which you lay the seats in, mark them then remove the seats and drill and boom you have threads. Thanks toyota?







The seat belt and the rest of the holes are there except the seat belt anchors. For some reason they put the holes in and the threads for the pretensioner but not the anchor? and it couldn't be in a more hard to get to place. We made a tab with a nut on the end of it that we had to fish into the piller and once the bolt was started it locked so we could tighten it. Kinda a PITA and the hardest part of the swap.



We also had some no so pretty cuts to make in the side panels, which you need to keep yours unless you plan on swapp out the rear seats and everything else. We didn't opt for swapping the seats, they are completely different and we weren't sure if there were even holes for them. Plus our doner 4runner had cloth and we have pleather so we opted to not swap them and cut plastic.







All the cut plastic is barely noticeable and can't really be seen once everything is installed.









I will come back to this later and add more pics of the finished product. I also need to get the seats recovered to match the front seats but they are black cloth for now.
