This is a practice I always used when buying a new vehicle -- if close to Oct, I always waited and got the new year model. It will definitely give you more resale, if you only keep the vehicle a few years. The shorter the ownership time, the more additional money you get on resale by having the vehicle titled one year later.
However, if you expect to keep the runner 10 years, then the 2012 over the 2011 will make close to no difference on resale.
Look up book values on back to back years equipped identically and same mileage, only different year. That will give you the information you need re depreciation.
